Hmm. Sadly I really do not know how to help in this situation. Usually when there is an issue with the update and hacked items, there is a specific error code. My best guess is that this is either a 3ds issue, a cartdrige issue, or an sd card issue. My best advice would be to contact Nintendo...

So currently when you start up the game, it should give you the promt to start a new town, but it gives you an update error, correct?

I'm really not sure. Nintendo claimed that it was specifcially "items you cannot usually obtain", but some people said they got the error without even hacking their town in the first place. I've heard that it can also occur if you trade an item with someone and recieve a hacked item.

Is the town you're playing in hacked?

Really the only problem I could think of is the system being out of date, but since you already updated it, I'm not sure what it could be. Could be an error with the cartridge but it's unlikely an update error would pop up. Did you update to welcome amiibo recently or a while ago?

Is your game a digital or physical copy?
