If someone replies to you with your name, or with a reply with a quote from you...is there a way to check that?

Sometimes you'll say something, then 50 people will come in on a thread, and somewhere in the middle of those 50 someone might have said something to you, and somehow you miss it and then you're being rude. I often try to reply back if someone's said something directly to me...but I wonder if there's an easy way to check...especially on older threads where you might not really be reading them all the time...

So...is there?

Along the same lines...what if you've unsubscribed from the thread and someone mentions you...is there a way you'd ever know?

Other than keen vigilance and using your browser's search function (typically the F3 key for windows users), I am not aware of any.

The best way to check is to subscribe to the thread. Frequently check your subscriptions through your settings.

Hmm...wish there was a faster way though.

I bet the admins have a way, like any thread you say Jeremy in, he shows up. He KNOWS!

Let's test it. :p

I summon thee, Jeremonius!

I've always just searched my username to see if I've been quoted, since I very rarely go back to each thread and check. All threads where you've been quoted will show up in the search, and you can then click on each thread and use the "Search Thread" dropdown to find any mention of your username, including someone quoting you. Any threads where you've posted but haven't been quoted won't show up in the initial search, so this is the best way I've found to see if anyone's replied to me.

Maybe there is a better/more efficient way and I've been using a tedious approach the entire time, but it works nevertheless. :)

I didn't even think to do this, so if that's the only way, it's much much better than scanning 10 pages of posts...sometimes you really fall behind on a thread and it's so daunting to read through every single last reply on that thread. Thanks for this suggestion! :)

Reminds me of the years I used this forum software, vBulletin. I assume the software version is 3.8.x.

There was a developer, Nexia (changed his user name to vbenhancer, and has since retired: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/member.php?u=363548), who was working on several modifications I really liked for vBulletin, but one that was only featured on his forum was a 'quote notification.' That feature added a profile tab from which a member could view new posts in which she was quoted.

Unfortunately, that modification was never developed, but from my searches there may be similar ones for vBulletin 3.8.x that are still usable. For instance, from what I read, here is a similar modification that might still be downloaded on the last page here, and includes updated instructions: http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=112498&page=7 I have forgotten my login details for that website and no longer use the software, so cannot confirm for myself.

Obviously, this modification is different from the one Nexia had in mind, and I can imagine issues with flooded inboxes, not to mention I have no idea how many queries this would add, or how much code must be added.

As implied, I do not believe a quote notification feature was integrated with vBulletin, at least the 3.x version, but there certainly has been interest in adding one.

Unfortunately most of that went over my head. I appreciate the response anyway. My best guess is that you said in the current version there's no way, but it is possible in another version. As long as I'm not sitting here not knowing how to do something that everyone else knows how to do easily, I can live with that. :)

Oh, I was actually directing that stuff at any administrator who might read this, but to put what I said in a less rambling way:

I believe there are 'modifications' (i.e., forum files to add or edit via FTP and the database) for vBulletin 4.x (the 'upgrade' for the forum software that supersedes the version used at this forum).

This forum uses vBulletin 3.x. There might be modifications for it, but they are probably all outdated.

In other words: If this feature were added, it would have to be custom coded by the forum owner or someone hired by the forum owner, since existing instructions provided by other coders are already outdated. And such a coding job would probably be a time drain.
