Gaming Pet Peeves

unskippable cutscenes...especially if u already finished the game once and have to backtrack to collect something because u missed it the first time. doesn't always bother me, but it's annoying nonetheless lool

  • Mentioned a ton of times, but long tutorials/cutscenes that are unskippable. Makes replaying certain games unnecessarily tedious.
  • Racing games: Excessive rubber-banding. For those that don't know the term, it's when an AI opponent racer is hit with a bunch of obstacles and/or items that impedes their position, only to suddenly catch up in a short amount of time. Mario Kart balances this out tolerably for the most part, but there are quite a few racing games out there that are notorious for this.
  • Bad hitboxes or logic. If you're playing a first-person shooter game for example, a bullet to the head should realistically kill the enemy, right? Well, I can think of several games where this does not happen.
  • Small trees that are invincible. Why do I mention this? If I took the Rhino Tank from Grand Theft Auto for example, I should be able to destroy almost everything in my path. Small trees that are the size of a light post? They never budge once.
  • Cheating AI: Mainly for luck-based games such as Mario Party where seemingly every good thing happens to the opponent and not you.
  • Online play: People that play music on the microphone, have a ton of annoying background noise or don't speak English (deepest apologies to any non-native speakers that are reading this). I usually mute all the strangers if I get put into a random lobby for these reasons alone.
  • Pay-to-win. If I have to purchase a DLC to get the OP stuff quickly, you've basically lost me. Paying for stuff that's purely cosmetic is alright by me, as long as it doesn't provide an advantage.
  • Locking re-released retro games behind a subscription service without offering the option of straight-up purchasing them (looking at you, Switch Online Expansion Pack). While PlayStation's retro catalogue is still sort of lackluster when it comes to the games they currently offer for the PS5 specifically, you are at least able to purchase individual games without having to upgrade to the top-tier PlayStation Plus plan. For crying out loud, just let me own the game, and we're good.

It really irritates me when players roll everywhere in Zelda games. I get that it's faster getting around but it just turns me off completely from watching, let's say, a casual playthrough in which it's nothing but rolling.

It's more tolerable in a speedrun because it's mostly the runner executing glitches to achieve maximum mobility. Sometimes I just want a Wind Waker or an Ocarina of Time longplay in the background with the soothing pitter-patter of Link's footsteps, not him grunting every time he rolls. It's only funny when he gets hit by an enemy, lol

When I find a playthrough that has very little to no rolling, it suddenly becomes my new favorite comfort video.

nothing drives me crazier than when a game has you fight a boss and win, just for you to actually lose once the cutscene starts. Makes no sense to me why that fight was even there then

Extended forced tutorials that you can't opt out of!! I'm not normally bothered by game tutorials in general or even a bit of hand-holdiness (...sometimes I need it LOL) but when it just keeps going and going and explaining things I already know or have figured out on my own, it's like... okay I get it, please let me just play the game now 😭 it's even more painful when a character will ask if you need help or not, and when you say no... they still give you the full explanation anyway orz
