I've noticed that a lot of the villagers I purposely kept ignoring keep re-appearing on my main street asking for houses to be built... so my question is - do I have to just do their houses in order to "open gates" for some of the other villagers or is it completely random and I'm just unlucky?

The same happens to me. I keep getting some of the same people over and over. When I pick one of them. Then I'll get some new characters for a few days.

I'm sure some villagers are locked behind others.

There's not really any point in ignoring certain villagers anyways, just do their homes! Unlock their items and play the game :) It's much more entertaining when you build houses for everyone regardless to whether they are popular, ugly, cute, whatever. I spent just as much time on Marshals house as I did on Punchy's (I strongly dislike Marshal) plus, once you get them out of the way you don't have to worry about them anymore :)

I get your point. I guess I just feel more motivated when I have some kind of bond with a certain villager. haha... Unless they happen to have cool items.
So anyway, now I know that there's no escaping them.

I believe certain starter villagers are required to unlock others but I could be wrong. My friend and I got the same starter villagers (Daisy, Zell, Marcy, etc.) and then after a while we started getting different ones on main street. Some of them keep coming back so I wonder if I'm supposed to design their homes or if I'm getting them at random.

Worst part is they keep asking for the same theme .... zzzzzz......

... yeah... i keep getting cafe and there's about 3 villagers in my town asking for soccer/boxing and 2 for studio and i just dont wanna do them right now but i guess i have to.....

i need to unlock exterior items/pwps...

Yes, those jocks asking for the boxing and wrestling rings are the most annoying of all - worst still, is that they're all the jocks I don't care about. The only jocks I like are Stinky and Rudy and I didn't get Rudy yet.

Yeah, I believe the starter ones are the same also based on some "let's plays" I watched. For all those persistently reappearing, I think we'll just have to design their homes in order to unlock new ones *sigh*.

I usually just pick the theme I want stuff from the most each day, even if it's not something I particularly want to design a house around. I usually just pull out the stuff that goes with the theme and drop them in the room and then say I'm done so I can come back and make a better house with that theme if I like it, or come back and re-design it to fit a different theme.

When all else fails, reset. If I'm being lazy and don't see one I want to do I reset since it doesn't affect the game. I get lots of jocks wanting gyms and such as well. Resetting I've found ankha, lucky, phoebe, and some other really good ones!!!

I don't think you can actually get rid of those villagers, I know, it sucks. I think I have Rasher on my main street asking for a house but to be honest, he kinda freaks me out so I don't really want to lol.

Anyway, the best thing you could probably do would be do their house, and only unbox their wishlist items and then finish. That's what I had to do for a few.
