To be clear, I don't mean gameplay. What do you consider to be the genre of the AC universe as a whole?
Pesonally, I think sci-fi. (Of course, I'm a biased trekkie). My theory is that AC is a utopian(dystopian?) future where most animals are sentient and contribute to society. Add in aliens, time travel, and possibly interdimensional travel I think my claim holds water. But what do you think? Whats AC to you?

Honestly I don't really think of it as having a "genre." AC is just AC. I think that's part of the beauty of it, that you can basically write your own story as to what exactly is going on.

I like MapleSilver's comment. Since Nintendo just put this player/mayor into a setting full of animals without clarifying a genre or origin story, it allows us to make AC what we want or think it is.

Personally, I think the villagers are actually humans in costumes rather than bipedal, talking animals.

ACNL’s genre is whimsical Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Just kidding. Kind of.

...Lol. I completely understand what y'all saying. This isn't the conversation I was going for. Maybe 'genre' was the wrong word? I was thinking more along the lines of 'themed universe conspiracy theory'... Am I just too weird? Does no one else contemplate AC's mysteries?

I fully expect Animal Crossing Switch to tackle the alien invasion that was hinted at in New Leaf in a grand, cutscene-heavy story mode.

I honestly think it's just AC, like others have said. No specific genre.

I don't think the OP meant what video game classification AC falls under....as if you were searching on Amazon for it.I think they meant what literary and/or cinematic genre would it be compared to.I've never really considered it but I agree that Animal Crossing does have a lot of sci-fi traits as mentioned in the first post.It could also be considered as a mystery.....why did you get dumped off at a town you've never even heard of and why did they put you in charge of it?Why is the town populated by bipedal, talking animals and why aren't these animals wearing pants?By the way,I'm also a big Star Trek nerd:

Live long and prosper.

Wikipedia put animal crossing under a genre called; Social simulation
like the sims, persona, harvest moon...etc.

I wouldn't say there is a genre. Its animal crossing. You are not pressured to do anything. The way players play AC is different depending on who you are
