Coco's Japanese name Yayoi (やよい) is a reference to the Yayoi Period (300BC-AD300) in Japan, an era near the end of which Haniwa statues, the inspiration for gyroids, were first created. She is basically a walking Haniwa statue. Haniwa statue's are made to house the spirits of the deceased. So when someone dies their spirit will inhabit one of these statues that are buried with the dead. They are buried so that the dead don't harm the living. But if one was to escape, such as the case with Coco her personality will be based on the type of spirit that currently inhabits her. When Coco comes to a town she can either be good or evil depending on the spirit. Most players of the Animal Crossing series will have a nice and very personable Coco in their town. This is because most of the spirits are good. But every now and again one unlucky player will come across an evil Coco. When this happens not only will their town and console be in danger but they themselves will be in danger. Sometimes depending on how evil the spirit is they might be in dire danger. Coco has been known to even cause premature death in players as young as 5 years old. There have been some cases where someone would survive an encounter with an evil Coco and live to tell their story. These stories are gruesome and tell of torture and house fires. Beware if Coco comes to your town and pray you are one of the lucky ones.
