Welcome to my second amiibo Review! Here, I will tell a brief history behind the character and then I'll review its amiibo by 3 factors: its presentation, its usefulness and its accessibility as of now. Today, we will cover everyone's favorite reptile Yoshi.

With a lighting like that, one could possibly imagine Yoshi dressing like a gentleman.

A little bit of history...

Yoshi originally came from an idea of a rideable animal that was meant to be put in Super Mario Bros. However, the limitations from the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) hardware prevented it from surfacing. It took over 5 years and the launch of Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) for the concept to emerge in Super Mario World. In this game, Yoshi acts as a power up mount. He can eat, gobble, gains a special ability depending on the color of the swallowed shell and can even give you and a mid-air jump at the expense of his imminent doom. This guy became so popular he ended up spawning his own franchise starting with a game released on SNES in 1995, which is Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. Or you can just call it Yoshi's Island. In this game, it introduces a new mechanic that let you produce eggs from gulping a foe and then throw eggs, giving an extra layer of dimension in terms of gameplay.

Presentation

This amiibo's pose perfectly captures his spirit. A look on his walking stance showed on how innocent and mellow he is, while making him a bit more dynamic. It seems like Yoshi is taking a casual stroll on a lazy Sunday afternoon. It's also great for watching from more angles than your average amiibo. Not content of his head facing to the right? You can turn him around so he can somewhat stare at you while still seeing almost every aspect of his body!
Yoshi may be among of the least detailed amiibo out there, therefore making him more susceptible to jarring paint defects as my amiibo did suffer from them. Thankfully, that doesn't necessarily mean it's a bad thing. For one, the lack of texture works quite well with the character itself. After all, isn't he supposed to be a cartoon-like character? Also, he does lend extremely well for a custom paint job. If you look up on the Internet, you'll find out that there are multiple color variations to that amiibo. Even if you get a paint defect Yoshi, you can still correct them by painting them with the appropriate colors as long as your dominant hand is steady enough.

Usefulness

Being a part of the very prolific Mario franchise as well of being quite popular to host in a number of games of his own, the amiibo is certainly no slouch when it comes to the usefulness. Just don't be surprised if he's compatible in as many compatible games as Mario would, if not slightly less.
One concern about both the Smash and Super Mario variations of Yoshi is that they would be slightly surpassed by the upcoming 3 Yarn Yoshi amiibo. The latter of which are not only compatible with every game the Smash/Super Mario Yoshi amiibo does, but also add an extra playable Yarn Yoshi in Yoshi's Woolly World. That feature is entirely optional and doesn't really unlock anything exclusive from that game as far as I know, therefore choosing which variation to pick is only a matter of preference.

List of compatible games that Read-Write this amiibo's memory:

- Super Smash Bros. for 3DS/Wii U : Use him as a CPU-controlled Smash Fighter and level up to 50.
- Mario Party 10 : Use him to unlock Yoshi board from amiibo party and use him as a playing piece that will retain the tokens he obtained at least once during a game.

List of compatible games that reads this amiibo:

- Mario Kart 8 : Unlock Yoshi suit for Mii characters to wear.
- Hyrule Warriors : Use him to unlock a weapon from level 3 or below, materials for crafting or even up to 50,000 rupees.
- Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker : Use him to gain a 1-UP mushroom once per day.
- Yoshi's Wooly World: Unlock a Yoshi design based on the character, this time he's solid instead of yarn.
- One Piece: Super Grand Battle! X (Japan-only): Use him to unlock his outfit that give a special ability for Usopp.
- Girls Mode 3: Kirakira Code (Japan-only): Use him to unlock a Yoshi themed hoodie.
- amiibo Tap: Nintendo's Greatest Bits : Use him to let you play a few "scenes" from NES and SNES titles.

Accessibility

If we're strictly talking about how accessible is the Smash Yoshi amiibo, then I wouldn't say he's easy to find. You'll have to put some effort on finding that soon-to-be-rare amiibo, as most retailers won't have him and if they do, you won't find many. If you're unable to find him or aren't willing to search everywhere offline and online, then there's always the Super Mario variation of Yoshi for the same price of $12.99 USD. The latter is quite common and shouldn't take too long on acquiring it, especially given that Nintendo is more than happy to manufacture more of him. If you're only interested to any of the Yarn Yoshi amiibo, well you're going to wait until Yoshi's Woolly World is released in your region until you can admire their wool texture.

Final verdict

Like Mario, the Yoshi amiibo comes highly recommended for pretty much anyone. The Smash variation is quite a delight for sights. Being a part of the same franchise from the titular plumber, Yoshi has a lot of compatibility potential, and is already supported in quite a lot of games. Even if you struggle finding his Smash variation for the MSRP, there's always the Super Mario one that you can find quickly enough and the upcoming 3 Yarn Yoshi amiibo.

Recommendation: GET IT!

Quick update to the review: Recently, we heard that Yoshi's Woolly World is compatible with more amiibo other than Yarn Yoshi. Mario, Luigi, Peach and more are going to unlock Yoshi designs based on the characters. Even any Yoshi amiibo will generate a Double Yoshi, but its woolly counterpart will actually get to save one Yoshi design.
However, my point still stands as choosing which variation of Yoshi amiibo is pretty much up to you, since the differences between a Yarn Yoshi and any previous variation of Yoshi amiibo won't matter much gameplay-wise.
