In this thread: Me slinking back to my island after the new Animal Crossing Direct & trying to whip the place into shape before all the new content drops. Fortunately, Annwfyn was already mostly done back in April and May, but I do want to document both its current state and the changes to come in November.

Annwfyn is named for the mythological Welsh Otherworld, also spelled Annwn, Annwyn, or Annwvyn.

I don't remember if I've talked about my process for selecting an island (and to be honest, I don't really remember much of my mindset at the time). I don't think I was too picky this time; however, I did know that I wanted a "town" to be the center of my island, and therefore that I wanted Resident Services to line up with my airport. Not that you can really tell anymore now that I've slapped pathing down all over the place, but it is, I promise.

Other bonuses of this map included the long dock, big beach (and few) beach rocks, and a large peninsula, but I wasn't resetting specifically for them. ​

03. Island Areas

Annwfyn's downtown is small and cluttered, taking up the southern portion of the island. The main downtown area, consisting of Resident Services, Nook's Cranny, Able Sisters, the campsite, and several villagers' houses, is circled by an incomplete railroad station and a manmade canal. Over the east bridge of the canal is the museum and a small park, which is neither very impressive nor very clean, but has a pretty nice rock garden, at least?

There's also a few stretches of beach near downtown, but those are even less clean than the park. We wouldn't recommend as a tourist destination.

As you leave Annwfyn's downtown and head north across the canal, a dirt road will lead you to Dom and Dobie's farmlands. They are messy but functional; while Dobie has been managing his small tract of land for years and is well-known for his mushrooms and pumpkins, Dom is newer to the farming gig and is still preparing his land for the upcoming crop cycle.

To the island's northeast is the wilderness (relatively). While it does have a few inhabitants, it's mostly cluttered with trees, flowers, and incidental decoration. There are stories of the villagers of Annwfyn getting lost here and reemerging dazed. (There are rumors that this, in particular, is why Annwfyn may never be a five-star island.) ​

A quick tribute & place to save the Dream Address of my first island, Muir Wood. Unlike Annwfyn, Muir Wood fully embraced the cottagecore aesthetic, and I had an excellent time playing with rivers, country fencing, and many, many tiny cliffs everywhere. ​

Happy Wednesday, I think -- getting out of bed this morning felt like that kind of day.

On the other hand, getting out and about after a quick change of clothes felt better. I found Gabi in the museum looking at butterflies. Not surprised it's her favorite part of the museum -- it's one of mine, too.

Afterwards, faced with a gloomy day and the threat of rain, I headed to the small downtown ramen stand and ran into Dobie taking a break from his day, too. (He got up and spritzed the monstera a moment later, which was nice of him.)

After a bowl of ramen, I headed out of downtown to check out the farms. Dom was waiting for his bus, too -- said something about patrolling Annwfyn. Not sure what crimes he expects to happen on a tiny rundown island when Redd's not docked, but we agreed to split duties and I ran my lap of the island.

Predictably, no crimes, except that Pecan had fleas on her first day on the island. ​

october 21, 2021

Today was a much clearer, brighter day. While my accomplishments today were...negligible, Annwfyn is so close to being "done" until the November 5th update turns everything upside down again anyway that I didn't feel too bad for just wandering around town, admiring my villagers for possessing the dignity to actually Sit!! In!! Chairs!!

Towards the end of the day, however, Dom talked me into running some laps of the island with him. I wasn't down for the thousands that he was proposing, but I figured I could be a good running partner for maybe...two laps. Two. Yeah.

But I stopped at less than one lap, because...

This is weird. And new. When'd this get here?

Maybe I should've taken patrolling Annwfyn more seriously yesterday. ​

october 22, 2021

Today was bright and sunny again. I met up with Dobie and we sat and chatted for a while, catching up. He doesn't usually interact much with the other villagers on the island -- I think maybe he scares the smaller ones, being a wolf and all, but he's always talking about how he wants to prepare snacks when I come to visit.

Later, I ran into Dom again and he mentioned somebody with a weird hat on the beaches, and, well. There sure was.

After I swam out and found the stranger's lost communicator, I finished decorating my beaches -- by which I mean, making them look #aesthetically grubby, like the rest of my island. Is "trashcore" a thing I can say? Because it's kind of what this place is.

Once my beaches were done, though, my island is officially done until the update shakes everything up!

I finally set my dream address at sunset! ​

Well, there have been some changes around the island!

I finally solidified my "permanent" villager lineup, and went on a hunt for Henry, Blaire, or Bones. After 85 tickets, I found Henry and quickly invited him back to Annwfyn, but didn't have the stamina to gamble on finding Bones and Blaire -- searching for just two villagers out of over four hundred was too daunting for me.

Instead, I amiiboed them in through the campsite!

I have a huge soft spot for Bones, who was my first lazy villager on my first island. (Maddie was my first peppy villager on that island, too!) I eventually moved both of them off because of their starter homes, but I'm so excited to get them back for good now, a year and a half later.

I was more hesitant on Blaire -- but since I'd had Pecan as a "permanent" resident on Muir Wood already, I let her go and brought Blaire instead. I think she and Marshall are going to have a lovely time together.

Of course, there was plenty of standard island living, too...

Just sitting around waiting on the update to drop now -- I preordered the Happy Home Paradise DLC first thing this morning, so now it's just running around the island, coming up with headcanons for my villagers and town, all that.

As you can see, I also went ahead and dressed up for Halloween. Since all of Annwfyn's NPCs are already taking out their little horns and things, it seems only fitting for me to join in as well. Besides, the pirate costume isn't really a costume -- it's the outfit that I wore when I moved from my old island to Annwfyn, and is more of a background story -- how a shipwreck stranded me on an abandoned island, coincidentally just as Tom Nook and his vacation getaway package arrived. Without any other options, I pretended that I was there for that all along.

If only I knew then how much debt I'd be getting into, eh?

I've been finding my villagers in the museum a lot lately, particularly in the bug exhibit. No interest in fine arts, no interest in fish, no interest in fossils, but boy do the villagers of Annwfyn love a good beetle.

Did anyone else have a phase where their villagers would never go into the museum, or was that just me?

I've also been spending some time on Harv's island, trying to polish up my interior decorating skills. Dobie always seems to be the star of the show in these little arrangements -- first he's running a cafe, next he's over there writing his memoir while everybody else just enjoys the ambiance. And Dom, bless him, never seems to be able to make up his mind, regardless of whether it's about coffee or a good book. ​
