* This moth is native to the continent of North America.
* This moth is often referred to as the "polyphemus moth."
* These moths have an average wingspan of 16 cm, which is 6 in!
* The name "Polyphemus" is derived from the greek myth of Polyphemus.

* Each one of these moths have large eye spots that aren't actually it's eyes.
* These fake eyes are on the back of the wing and serve for several reasons.
* One reason is for a distraction display. Another is to blend in with its surrounding.
* This moth is apart of the Saturniidae family.
- A small head.
- Large wings.
- Tiny mouths.
- Lobed wings.

- These moths are known for being "giant silk moths."
Lobed: (Science: anatomy) a more or less well defined portion of any organ, especially of the brain, lungs and glands. Lobes are demarcated by fissures, sulci, connective tissue and by their shape.
* The Saturniidae family is Lepidoptera.
- Lepidoptera is just the scientific name for butterflies and moths.
- It is an order. Species, genera, and families are all under orders.
- Lepidopterans are 10% of all discovered species on planet Earth!
- There are 180,000 species, 126 families, and 46 superfamilies of this!
The scientific community classifies this according to taxonomy A species is a group of organisms that are able to interbreed and share genes. While those in a family all share common attributes. While a superfamily is more distinctive than a family. Also, superfamily is just another word for phylum.
* This moth is much like other Saturniidae moths.
* It lays light-brown eggs on various leafs of plants.

* Their entire life cycle is on average just 3 months.

- ~10 days being eggs. Eggs are usually laid in safe locations near a food source so when they hatch, there's food nearby.

- 5 to 6 weeks as larvae. Larve looks like maggots.

- 2 weeks a pupa (caterpillar). A caterpillar eat various leaves and when it is done eating leaves, it hang themselves upside down usually from a twig or a leaf. From there, it spins itself into a cocoon to become a butterfly.

- 4 days as an adult. Adults do not feed but they mate. Females mate once, then they spend their lives laying down eggs while males may mate multiple times.

Good thing I'm a biologist. I understand this fully.

I wish this counted as extra credit for one of my classes.
