For quite a long time, I never thought that a thermostat could catch fire, until one of my four Warm Tiles thermostats (model MTC-1991) blew up Thursday night.
I was in the basement using a desktop computer. The lights around me were flashing a few times, and then heard a firework-like explosion. Worried about that unusual noise, I looked around me and I saw the thermostat caught fire on top of it. It smelt like burnt plastic, which could apparently be lethal if smelt for too long. So, I quickly evacuated everyone in my house and called the firefighters to take care of the danger. They eliminated the fire and took the burnt the thermostat away from wall. Luckily, all the flames really did is melting the above part of the thermostat and roasted just a very small part of the wall.
Any advice for a tile warmer thermostat to not catch fire? I've been searching about the MTC-1991 model, which is the model I have, albeit with no numbers and Fahrenheit/Celsius notation shown and the logo being WarmTiles. I can't find a single mention about it somehow exploding, yet I managed to find some other peoples facing a similar issue for other thermostats.
