They added Contra: Alien Wars the other day, but nothing else.
REALLY looking forward to booting up the eShop one day and seeing Super Mario RPG available for purchase!

Here's the list of currently available SNES games for New 3DS that both North America and PAL regions currently have:

  • F-Zero
  • Pilotwings
  • Super Mario World
  • Donkey Kong Country
  • EarthBound
  • Super Mario Kart
  • Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
  • Super Metroid
  • Super Punch-Out!!
  • Contra III: The Alien Wars

That's pretty much what we know for any region that isn't Japan. That region has three titles that has yet to come on our shores: Mega Man 7, Mega Man X and Donkey Kong Country 3. Also, here's a list of confirmed upcoming SNES games for the Japanese New 3DS models:

  • Super Castlevania IV
  • Super Ghouls'n Ghosts
  • The Legend of Mystical Ninja
  • Final Fight
  • Final Fight 2
  • Final Fight 3
  • Fire Emblem: Monshō no Nazo (Mystery of the Emblem) | Japan-exclusive game
  • Fire Emblem: Seisen no Keifu (Genealogy of the Holy War) | Japan-exclusive game
  • Kirby's Dream Course
  • Mega Man X2
  • Mega Man X3
  • Street Fighter II' Turbo: Hyper Fighting
  • Street Fighter Alpha 2
  • Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers

Someone also datamined the files of Super Mario World VC release, which brought up more titles to come for the SNES VC. Keep in mind that this may mostly pertain to Japan once again, so Square Enix VC titles (even Super Mario RPG) might not even come to New 3DS VC. Interestingly, Super Mario All-Stars is also found on that list, yet Wii U never got it in first place.

Very helpful, thanks for sharing that.

I'll definitely pick up Mega Man X/X2/X3 at some point...back in the day I rented those from Blockbuster more than I care to admit XD

I have a dilemna though: I have enough credit in my eShop wallet to buy Dragon Quest 7 and 8 when those finally hit the 3DS, and if I buy any virtual console titles, that'll break my DQ budget and only allow me to buy one of them :/

Know that I know that it might be awhile before we get Mega Man X/X2/X3, or might not even see Mario RPG, my wallet *might* be safe for now! XD

Donkey Kong Country 1 and 2 have been tempting me for weeks though...

DKC 1 and 2 are available on there now, at least in the US.

alright, then yeah japan def has or will be getting dkc3 in the near future (forget what the announcement release date was, but I did remember it being announced), which should in all likelihood mean we'll get as well sometime later (hopefully this year)

only other thing I remember off the top of my head was some fire emblem game(s?, idr if just one or more) that were never released overseas and will probably stay that way

Can the New 3DS even emulate Super Mario RPG due to its FX-chip?

Also, it sucks that we didn't get the european version of Contra III (Super Probotector). Robots ftw.

No idea, but I like that they keep adding still. I so want Earthbound and Super Mario Kart at some points.

Most of my favorites has already been added to VC but there's a few more I'd like to see on there. Man, I gotta upgrade to a New 3DS soon.

Yeah, for sure c: And yeah you should, it's great and I love the large screens!

I think Super Mario Kart is up on the US eShop, and I know Earthbound definitely is...it's the first one I bought.

Yeah I know they are on EU shop, had no credits on me when I saw them though. But yeah SMK is loads fun had it on SNES way back

Among the titles found from datamining the Super Mario World VC files, it suggested that Marvelous is being considered to be re-released later. Since the original game had the SA-1 chip built-in, it could mean that other SNES that supported that chip could arrive on New 3DS VC as well, possibly Kirby Super Star, Kirby's Dreamland 3 and Super Mario RPG.

Speaking of Super Mario RPG, it seems like it's already released in both Europe and Japan on Wii U, yet North America is still waiting for it to arrive. I'm also fairly certain it will eventually arrive on New 3DS for every region as well. It's only a matter of time, since Nintendo tends to release Virtual Console games on a date that's most likely randomly picked by the staff.

It's a shame that any simultaneous multiplayer SNES game that gets released on New 3DS don't support Download Play, nor even Local Play. You can still access to the multiplayer modes in some games, but you'd have to press Y while holding ZL and ZR to swap Player 1 and Player 2. Yet, some 3DS NES VC games actually supported Download Play. At least, the overwhelming majority of SNES games released at the moment are known to provide a solid single-player experience to make up from the somewhat disappointing omission.

Earlier this week, I got Earthbound on my New 3DS, while I still have the Wii U version. By sheer curiosity, I wanted to compare each system's SNES VC emulation by leaving the attract mode playing at the exact same moment.
After a few minutes, I noticed that the New 3DS runs very slightly slower than the Wii U counterpart, since the attract mode of the former gets milliseconds behind the latter. This is attributed to the slower hardware of the New 3DS model. When not comparing like I did, that difference isn't even noticeable, so it shouldn't pose any issue to the gameplay, regardless of which SNES game you play.

Another issue I have with the SNES VC games on New 3DS is that there isn't some form of cross-play available despite owning the Wii U VC counterparts. Here in Canada, I've got no other choice than to pay $11.29 CAD per SNES game, which is 41% pricier than the Wii U versions just because Nintendo of America had to adjust with the currently low USD to CAD exchange rate. It's still cheaper than getting most of the loose SNES cartridges, so that's nothing to lose my sanity on.

Aside of these quirks, I've found the New 3DS VC emulation of each SNES game to be pretty good. Being able to play SNES games on the go seamlessly without relying on the unofficial methods is quite a boon for me!

Dang, I really hope that Super Mario World comes out in North America. I remember playing some version of it on the GBA back in elementary but a friend from school "borrowed" it and never gave it back. :c I'd really love to play it again on my new 3DS, otherwise I'm going to end up having to use an emulator to play it. :/

The original SNES version of Super Mario World is actually available on New 3DS in North America right now. You just have to find it on eShop.
