Not sure if I'm the only one, but I have rules for what villagers I can and can't keep haha. Not really rules I guess, but more like guidelines.

For example, no more than 2 of one personality type, only one of one species, etc. Mostly to keep the game fresh I guess and have some diversity.

I'm actually going to go against these rules today and get a new normal! I guess, in the end I want to do what makes the game the most fun for me, even if it breaks these weird ocd-like guidelines I have in my head

My villagers were actually chosen based on color scheme and species. I have two wolves to be the leaders of the pack, along with eight dogs. They all follow an orange-brown color scheme. I have a picture here for reference:

I love all of my villagers. I haven’t been more fond of a group of characters since the Totodile evolution line, lmao. Mac, Biskit, and Bones are Amiibos.

I like to have one of each personality, no more than two of the same personality, and no more than two of the same species at one time. I don't foresee myself changing from this unless I get really inspired by a theme or something.

i don’t really have any rules when it comes to my villagers — as long as i like them, i’ll invite any villager regardless of their personality, species, gender, etc. however, the only ‘rule’ that i really have is that i can’t have a villager more than once in any given game, so that i can experience as many new villagers as possible. for example: since i’ve had skye in new horizons, i can’t have her again because despite how much i adore her, i’d rather the slot she’d fill up be filled up by a villager that i haven’t had yet instead. : )

This sounds a lot like how I played NH right from the start because it was so much easier to obtain/cycle villagers in this game. I would have 1 of each personality, plus an extra female and an extra male. Every villager was of a different species. Then I changed everything completely and now have 3 normals, 2 peppys, 1 snooty, sisterly, cranky and jock and no smugs. I also have double species in rabbits, alligators and goats. I liked both ways, but I was never bothered by it at all in NL, so it makes me think NH really has changed the game a lot, when it comes to villagers.

nope! none whatsoever. they can dress how they want, buy what they want, gift each other what they want etc. since i'm never going to get around to being able to give them better default houses via HHP, they can design those however they want too. the only thing i 'control' about my villagers are their greetings and catchphrases. lazies are (or were, in NL) my favorite personality, but i don't have an island full of them. i don't have any rules about personality or gender either. my island is skewed slightly towards male, and i have more lazies than anything else. (with no uchis and crankies in sight, although i have had both rotate through at points.) it wasn't really a conscious choice; most of my villagers are transplants from my two NL towns. i'm currently letting new villagers rotate in and out through two spaces until the final villagers i want ended up landing in them.

My rule is to have at least one of each personality type, but that's pretty much it—I consider my 9th and 10th slots "free spaces", basically, so I just go with whoever I want for those. I also try not to have repeat villagers across games, but I might loosen up on that rule depending on how many games I play in the future/if I ever make a second NH island/etc. Right now though, there's too many villagers I like and not enough room, so definitely no room for repeats, ahaha.

I always feel like I must have at least one of each personality, then I double up on one male and one female so those numbers are even. I like to cycle through villagers sometimes to keep things fresh, rather than having a set roster of villagers that remain in my town forever, and I often like to let the game give me random villagers when someone leaves so that I can meet new villagers that I may not have picked on my own. But if I go too long without having one of the personalities, I really start to notice it in the dialogue so I try to rectify that as soon as possible.

These rules are a bit personal but here it is for New Horizons:

1. Any villager who I have seen already and gotten their photo already must be skipped or moved out.
2. Villagers who have bad interiors will have their home changed
3. If a villager is thinking about moving out then they must be moved out in order to make room for more villagers
4. If a villager is running around the island, besides Resident Services will be kicked out because running is forbidden to protect flowers.
5. If villager has the same personality as the last villager they must be replaced by a different personality. (2 is fine but anything higher is bad)

I had a two villagers per personality rule. At this point, I don't care if I have multiples of one personality, I want all my favorites in my town. I don't really talk to my villagers anyway

I don't really have any major rules listed above like one of each personality type (which is probably why I have four lazies on my island that I don't want to move out), but I do have these very specific rules for villagers.

1. A villager can't move in if their house looks like an episode of Hoarders or they just absolutely neglect their house.
2. If I give a villager 3 or more gifts but they don't display them/wear any of them, I kick them out for being ungrateful.
3. A villager can't move back in if they moved out before because it will be weird with them having their memory erased of me.
4. I rarely go villager hunting, (I've only gone once.) I almost always get my villagers from the campsite. this also means I usually never kick villagers out through the thought bubble and also a part of me afraid of finding a 5th lazy villager I really like on a villager hunt.

other then #2 my villagers are kinda free to do whatever they want on my island because I don't kick them out for weird reasons.

In ACNL/ACNH where I can easily pick the villagers I want, I keep my towns female-only! If a male villagers comes in, I try to get his picture (I like to collect them) and then move them out. A few of my favorite villagers are male, but I have been making female-only teams (in other games) and towns for more than 10 years, it's a tradition at this point lol. Also, currently in ACNL I have picked only girl villagers with a pink house exterior to mach the town's colors.

In ACWW/ACCF, I try to kept them with as few male villagers as possible, but the important part is the exterior of their houses, I reset my towns over and over until I get the exteriors that matches what I want the town's aesthetic to be (you only can have 2-3 house sets in those games, thought they work differently)

In ACGC.... well, you have absolutely zero say in which villagers get in your town lmao, I have had villagers that I treat like royalty move out after a few weeks & villagers I keep ignoring and hitting with nets that insist to stay (*cough lumberg cough*). So I just accept it and try to get along with everyone. Its sad when someone moves out suddenly though.....

In New Horizons since you get to basically choose your villagers, I like to have one of each personality. (And since there's two extra plots I just pick two villagers I really like, my 'extra' villagers are Bea and Fang.) And I only try to have a maximum of two of the same species. (I have two cats, Mitzi and tangy.)

I try to have one of each personality, though I haven't had a sisterly villager in a while. I also try to get underrated villagers, with some exceptions if I really like them.

Can't explain it...it used to really bother me if a villager didn't have a bed...

I only really have one rule. To have at least one of each personality type.

Hmm i dont have rules but i try to get at least one villager of each personality bc the dislogues get very stale if u have many similar villagers... As for the species i dont have a rule, most of them are cats though haha but just bc i like them
