I'm getting sick of people bumping old threads. If it hasn't gotten a reply within a month, it is considered an old thread. But there are some users (can't name whom) who are bumping threads from over a year ago.

I think an auto-lock should occur once a thread starts to get inactive after 30 days, just like GameFAQs archives their old threads.

well those ones that were bumped from 2013 were bumped by a bot
and then ppl dont read timestamps and reply to the thread anyways

No.
It's common sense not to bump an old thread. If you see someone bump an old thread, report it, and they can enjoy their warning or w/e and (eventually) learn not to do it again - tough **** to them.

An "auto-lock" feature would just stop members doing something they shouldn't even be doing in the first place. Learn the rules or tough luck.

The only problem is that if I report a bumped thread, the moderators won't do anything about it. In fact, they haven't responded to my reports either. I'm not trying to sound rude or anything, but I reported threads that have been bumped from over a year and they didn't lock them.

omG i didnt know the mods had to actually lock the threads to let everyone know they had been dealt with!11!1!!!!

just because you didn't see them do anything doesnt mean they didn't do something.........................

Actually, locking would be the more appropriate action than warnings or infractions for bumping old threads. I don't think they publicly announce warnings like that.

Yeah, I think an auto-lock for threads after 30 days is a good idea. Some people don't even have common sense, and even if they get the warnings, they still continue.

Isn't really that big of an issue tho???

If ur only complaint in life is ppl bumping threads on a forum then u must be having a pretty good run!!

They're not lazy, but there are some things I don't agree on. That's all.

By the way, I haven't reported these recently bumped threads, but I have reported other bumped threads before.

We can't just add features to this site on the fly. A lot of modifications that we use on the site have to be bought. And something as minuscule as old thread bumping isn't worth even looking for something that does it automatically. If anyone has a problem with the way we do things on the site they are completely free to leave and find somewhere else to spend their time.

Lastly, it's not completely against the rules to bump old threads. There is a bit of leniency with it depending on the circumstances. If the thread is a month old and the bumping post is relevant I don't see what the problem is. But if it's four years old and someone posts in it then that's a problem. Having your own opinion is fine but it's really not very refreshing to come onto the site and see people groaning about things that really don't matter much and are blaming us for it.

Sorry if I was used to moderation advice from other sites, but thanks for telling me. So neither it's easy nor is it necessary to have such feature.

I don't think it would be very useful. If anything, it would be irritating. Sometimes bumping old threads (of your own) is less hassle than creating entirely new threads.

Hey lets play a game! It's called "Get over it!" :)

Yep, this is basically our position on it. Bumping threads is not inherently bad. Notice how our rule on this is quite vague and avoids setting a specific time, such as 30 days: "Do not post in an old thread if the topic is no longer relevant. This is known as bumping a thread." It's on a case-by-case basis. This is why anything like an auto lock after 30 days is not a good implementation, it's arbitrary.

A good example for bumping is often in the Gaming boards. A very popular game on the PC is League of Legends which has had a very big thread on TBT right here: http://www.belltreeforums.com/showthread.php?56777-League-of-Legends (over 1000 posts!) However, at the moment the game seems to have lost interest on TBT with the last two posts being from January 18th and February 8th. If a 30 day autolock or just a strict 30 day rule existed, it's likely this thread would find itself locked very soon, even though it's a large thread for a very popular game which is almost certain to rise back in activity within a few months probably. When that happens, it makes the most sense to bump that original thread, not start all over again and throw away the old one with so many posts unless it's been years since the last post.

Honestly, I spent way too much time on this post, but hopefully it helps to understand the thought process behind rules and polices. I should make more of these posts.

I gotta say, this was the first thing that went through my head when I saw this. Is it really that big of an issue? Would you prefer duplicate threads rather than posting to revive an old one that already exists? I don't see why some of y'alls panties are in a twist over this.

Those threads I complained about were not just older than a month. They were bumped from Summer 2013, and were just short-run discussions opposed to the long-run discussions like what Justin was talking about and helpful guides like Lassy's guide.

Do you understand what Justin said? The pros outweigh the cons by a significant amount, so complaining about isolated cases is arbitrary
