My wife and I plan on giving our 5 yr old (6 in Jan) a DS Lite for Christmas. He has wanted one since he messed with my little brothers a while back. He loves Mario Kart DD for the GC so we definately plan on getting Mario Kart DS. I also got New Super Mario Brothers from mycokerewards for free so he will have that one too.

What else would y'all suggest?

The Disney version of Meteos might be a good choice. I haven't played that particular incarnation, but I have the original and it's a great Tetris-like puzzler. I don't think they changed much for the Disney version and depending on your son's tastes it might be a good fit with the licensing. Then of course there's plain old Tetris, too.

;)

Hmm other games ... man I'm drawing a blank ... I'll see if I can think of some others. Before I read your thread I was thinking New Super Mario but you've got that covered. Pokemon seems to be the standard, too.

EDIT --- Geez, how could I forget Animal Crossing: Wild World!?!? Great game and should be terrific for a younger player as well! He'd probably like Nintendogs (any version) as well.

Yeah I'm trying to stay away from games that are too text heavy of course, he's still just learning a lot of words, but he loves racing and platformers.

Is AC:WW easy to pick up?
It is, definitely, but now that you mention reading there is a bit of text in it. I guess that one may be better to hold off on for a bit. Probably wouldn't enjoy it to its fullest if that's a frustration.

If you like the Meteos idea, you could also check out ZooKeeper. It's a pretty addictive puzzle game (in fact you can find it in the arcade here in the forums). It's your basic, "Match up 3 animals in a row to make them disappear" game.

Also the Mario VS DK games are pretty good.

I saw the mario vs DK game in the store but havent done much research on it. is the gameplay pretty simple/fun?

The only kirby games I've played myself were on the Nes but they were always fun, I bet he would enjoy those, thanks TK!

Oh yeah (sorry, cant edit yet) since he also into racing, Diddy Kong Racing DS might also be a good game. It wasnt a game for me, but I can see a kid his age really loving it.

Since he likes platformers, Yoshi's Island DS should be a good game for him.
Is that just a port of Yoshi's Island for the N64?
Pretty sure its the same with maybe a few extra levels after you beat it.
No, its actually an all new game, its mostly like Yoshis Island on the SNES, thats why most call this one Yoshis Island 2 instead of calling YS that.

Its a pretty fun game if you like the SNES version

Oh, then I guess I read up on it wrong. Sorry.

Actually thats my bad, I wrote "for the N64" because I was thinking Yoshis Story in my head. I wiki'd it and i see what you mean it does seem like an SNES sequel. Is the baby crying as grating as it was on the snes version?

I considered Diddy Racing but with us getting him Mario Kart DS I sorta dismissed it for awhile, good call though.

He Leg, small sidebar, do you still have access to the cool banners you made on the old boards? Now that I actually have a sig space it would be cool to put something in it LOL!

Yeah, I still have all the stuff I did on my computer, let me know if you want anything.

As for the babies screaming.... I forget, anyone else know? Maybe check youtube for some video.

Yoshi's Island DS is one of the best DS games ever made, and one of my favorite side scrollers ever. Yes, the babies scream, and now they have different screams depending on the baby... haha. It's not as bad as it was in Yoshi's Island for the SNES, though.
