turnips will only be good money if 1. you buy a TON of turnips. the more you buy = more profit, and 2. if you get a good nook wanting them for a nice price. sometime in your week your bound to at least break even, and once maybe every 2-3 weeks you'd more than likely hit a jackpot with turnips selling for 500+. if you have patience for checking with nook multiple times every day and enough money to first put into the turnips you're buying, they're by far the best way to make money.
aside from turnips, foreign fruit would be your best option. there was a poll recently asking people how many bells their orchards usually wield every 3 days. i don't have "orchards", but i have a TON of foreign fruit trees all over my town in random spots. the highest i usually get every 3 days is about 400k rounding upwards... and it's a LOT of work.
turnips = get rich quick, but checking in with nook a lot, and you may not do all that great if you don't first have the money to get a large amount of turnips. there's also a rumor i think that if you time travel, it effects nook's prices and you won't get those large numbers as often as someone who doesn't time travel.
fruit = definite money every 3 days, but a fraction of what you could be getting from turnips, if your turnips turned out to do well.
