Can someone please explain to me how Dodo codes work?

Title. It seems that they allow for a temporary Wi-Fi session, but there can still be effects on the town, making them different from New Leaf's dream codes in that regard. Anyone else know some key features to Dodo codes? Can you still have people via Dodo codes come over when you have people come over during a regular Wi-Fi session, or when someone else is playing on the console?

i guess it could also be compared to sw/sh link code trades. trading with anyone even if not on your friend's list. this would be like "link code" but visiting people not friends with
