Can you have a physical copy and a digital copy on the same 3DS?

I'm thinking of downloading the digital copy (I already have the physical) so I can use the second town as my themed town (I have a cool idea for one) but I've heard a lot about data corruption and stuff so I just want to check that it won't interfere with the physical copy I have. That's my main town so I definitely don't want to risk losing it!

Some data corruptions come from trying to move your SD card towns or trying to have more than one digital copy town.
