Hey everyone,

When I use my phone as a WiFi hotspot for ACNL, I cannot invite people over to my town: they see my gates open, but when they try to connect they get an error message. I can visit other villages perfectly fine though.

I have tried with quite a few people, but it never worked. And I do not have any other source of WiFi but my phone ^^' Has anybody with the same issue managed to solve it? If so, how?

Cheers

Hate to break it to ya, but there are no solutions. Take it from someone who had to use a mobile hotspot for maybe 2 or 3 years: THEY SUCK TRASH. The only thing a mobile hotspot is good for in terms is dreaming (very very rarely did I have problems) seeing on your Friend List who's online, forcing SwapDoodle to load new notes, visiting the Nintendo Eshop (last time I tried, downloading doesn't work) and that's about it. Sounds like alot? It isn't. Connections are slow, errors are constant, disconnecting is inevitable, not even connecting is a given. No Smash multilplayer, Tortimer Island always timed me out after 15 or 20 mins, and hotspots are so touchy. One time it worked with someone, but errored after a while. Days later I try to go to their town again and are completly unable too, despite the fact I already did. I'm surprised yours even lets you visit towns fine. Anytime my Nintendo or games needed an update, I had to use the WiFi at my grocery store or what I think was once a Nintendo Zone spot.

I've tried multiple 'solutions', none worked. Changing security type, password, ect... The only thing I haven't done was dismantle the firewall, which I do NOT recommend doing. Plain simple of it all, a mobile hotspot can be great in a pinch, but as a long running source, it has lots of limits and restrictions.

Wow I understand your frustration ah ah ^^' Except for inviting people my phone behaves OK. It even lets me update my console ^^ That being said I must say I have not try downloading stuff from the e-shop, and I never stay more than 2 min in someone's town (just to drop off or pick up stuff), or 10 min in a dream. Maybe if I try staying more the connection will crash ^^'

Maybe it depends on the phone itself as well, my connection seems more reliable than yours given what you are describing. Thank you for your reply, at least I know there is nothing I can do for my problem!

Yeah it seems our phones are different. Mine is an outdated un-updated Galaxy Samsung S5 that constantly voids all reception in my room. I've heard of someone else using their phone as a hotspot for their Xbox or Playstatiom, I forget which, and they said it works fine :/

For dreaming since I extremely rarely had problems, I imagine you will have near to none, I would dream for 1 or 2 hours on end. I wish there was more I could say for hotspots, but they seem limited compared to the real deal WiFi by a router.

Hmm... How good is the mobile data on your phone (e.g. fast)

It is pretty fast yeah, I have 4G where I live, and when I visit other people's towns it always works fine. I still have not found out why a connection via phone is one-way in my case... I recently saw that my laptop can be used as a hotspot too, I will give it a try when I get the occasion!

Hmm, I think (and am not sure) that the phone cannot handle the data that is needed to process in order to become the host. As I said, this is a guess.

Might be, but I do not know how to be sure. If I could identify the actual source of the issue that might help finding a solution, but I cannot :/ But if indeed it is a problem of data flow then there is not much I can do unless find another type of hotspot.

Yes, you cant really solve the problem if you cannot find the actual source, and really the only way to fix it is to get a different hotspot. Keep in mind I made a guess based on the info I have, so it may not be correct.

It?s based on how good your service is and might be based on your phone itself too. I have an iPhone XR and use my hotspot all the time for visitors, visiting, downloading from the eshop, and even watching Netflix on my laptop and it works great. Wish I could help more. Maybe try going to Starbucks and using their WiFi?

Maybe it is just the iPhone itself then ^^ it is a 7.
I will try with my own computer before relying on public or corporate wifi networks. That would really be a last resort. Or I can just visit people, it has been working fine so far. It is too bad for my train station though, I would love to make it modern ^^'
