back in november ChatGPT was released to the public. it's shown itself to be a powerful tool that could be a real game changer for research and education. i like using it to get paragraph responses about various tech subjects i've learnt about in cyber classes such as security frameworks, and concise responses on the pros and cons of various software tools.

it's also really good at giving answers to short answer questions and generating cover letters, and has even been shown to be able to pass the BAR exam. has anyone else used ChatGPT? what are your thoughts on it?

ChatGPT is really nifty. It's like a better version of Google. My husband has been using it a lot lately to just ask it random questions. One time he asked it to tell a story about soda cans and it came up with a really cute story where these sentient soda cans in a grocery store are being chased around by a cake that's trying to eat them, and the soda cans only end up being saved when a customer buys them and takes them out of the store.

It's also fun to get it to re-write, say, the first two passages from the bible but from the perspective of a popular character or personality, like Hank Hill or Bob Ross (the Bob Ross one was amazing)

I haven't gotten it on my phone yet but for me I would definitely use it for "googling" and for writing cover letters! I've heard that ChatGPT isn't always correct though. But at least you can correct it, unlike Bing's AI which I have heard will argue with you and keep telling you you're wrong lmao

Yeah I used it. Although keep in mind some of the things it says could be considered "Misinformation" since at the time it was relying on information from 2021. It can do coding for you, if you were to make a website or a game which is pretty awesome I will say. Although you may need to more clear and specific about what you want because sometimes it gives coding that it think it works but it doesn't work well.

ChatGPT is a interesting tool and I can already tell its going to be a bigger deal as the years go by. (which is a bad feeling I have if I am going to be honest)

I’ve never tried it. The first site I found with it you had to signup so I didn’t try because that’s so annoying and pointless lol

Of all the AI tech- the only one I like is the crappy voice memes, because people have to put effort into scripting them, and they’re currently crappy enough that EVERYONE can tell they’re AI.

These things are funny to watch in their infancy when they’re clearly still crappy and it feels like you’re messing with a broken toy but I found the chatbots/writing pretty boring knowing nobody actually wrote them. As a cheap example if a chatbot put out a copypasta it wouldn’t be as funny as an actual person doing it, part of the fun of copypastas was wondering what in them was sincere / imagining someone actually saying it. When funny dialogue comes out a robot, idk. Not feeling it.

As for its use in essays, I have not witnessed that and again not used it but I really enjoy working out semantics of wording for essays/analyses. Not interested. For something like dry formal email, maybe. For asking it questions, I’ve never tried it so idk but I doubt it could do that and if I want to input a picture of my art it can’t give feedback on what to improve or ideas like a human would, and I just want to be talking to actual PEOPLE.

i've used it a couple times and given it silly prompts, but i've also used it for other thing. i asked it how to sew a rectangle skirt, and its fine, but it's not as concise as a human giving advice of course. it's not as nuanced as that. i do think its fun to mess around with though, and i know lots of people have been using it for professional settings, I.E responding to emails.

I never used it for important things but I have tried it!! It was pretty cool how technology has advanced to make websites like this possible. I recently deleted my account for it though because I felt like it was kind of.... scary in a way that it could create so many ideas. Like, I asked it for some great gift ideas and it literally just gave me exactly what I wanted. I enjoy thinking and being creative so I basically felt like it made me more... uncreative???? I dont know 😆

Right now ChatGPT is just a toy. It can do some impressive things, but its greatest talent is spewing BS in an authoritative way, and we already have enough humans that do that. ChatGPT is just faster at doing it. ChatGPT might be able to help you get started with a project, but I'd definitely review and fact-check anything it spits out before actually using it. Humans are at least capable of answering "I don't know" to a question while ChatGPT will always try to give you an answer even if it's blatantly false which makes it more dangerous at this point. I wouldn't touch ChatGPT with a ten-foot pole for anything with high stakes. Maybe it will get better in the future, but I think that's a long way off.

I DO think it's rlly cool and has so much potential but theres no way I will ever feel normal using it.
Although I respect AI and think its existence is neat I don't think I should be able to access it because I'm just some random on the internet (as is everybody else) and when you view it like that you can start to see why its a risky game: people on the internet will do a wide range of things for a wide range of reasons and some of them we might not like.

if its anything thought, I'll admit I like the deepfakes of public figures streaming minecraft that have been popping up recently; they're pretty funny icl
