Checking open gates without using train station

I thought of this idea, don't know if anyone has posted about it yet. Instead of having to connect and see if there are open gates at the train station change your status in the friend list to "gate: open" or "gate: closed". If you're going to open your gate you must change it before you connect or the home button doesn't work.

Makes it quick to simply press the home button and look who's online and their gate status. Sound like a good idea or is it just me? I've personally already been using the method today.

It's a pretty good idea; I've already seen many of my 3DS friends doing it. For me, though, I don't think I'll do it often. It's a bit of a hassle to do it every time; maybe just when I plan on having the gate open for a while.

I do it whenever I plan on having my gates open. Or I also update it with the visitor of the day. Sometimes I just forget to update it too. But most of my friends know when I'll have them open since I post on FB about it.
