Just on a villager birthday! So luckily you don’t have to be friends with the villager. On a villagers birthday there will be a party happening all day, and anyone can come to the party and give a gift. It’s best practice to only give fruit as a gift so someone else’s villager doesn’t end up with new clothes or furniture items. So also don’t let people visit for birthdays if you don’t trust them to gift appropriately.

There’s a nook miles achievement for celebrating villager birthdays, so visiting other islands is a way to reach this milestone faster. You can even visit the same villager on their birthday in multiple islands!
