Weird title but I dunno how else to phrase it lol. I've been thinking about how most people think Appalachia/Appalachian Mountains is pronounced "Appa-layshin." But actually nobody around here says it like that, only foreigners. We ain't fancy 'round here. We call it plain ol "apple-atchin."

I also know of Greenwich Village in New York is commonly mispronounced but it's actually more like "grin-ich." What are some mistakes foreigners make when referring to where you live?

Freaking no one can pronounce Mississauga. Not even Obama.

"Mississagwa" "Mississ-oo-aga" "Mississwagwa"

Elen Degeneres had a little bit of trouble with the word Saskatchewan.
Sometimes when I try and say Toronto I manage to say Tron-Toe. It's the toe of that movie about those motorcycle people that have flashing lights ithink
Calgary becomes Calgree
pretty sure i've said ven-couver before

I came here to say this.

People always say library wrong, and ask where i live. They pronounce library liberry and ask axe xD

Nobody outside of Michigan can pronounce Mackinac. I haven't lived there in a while but still

I find almost anyone who is from outside of Canada (that I have met) cannot pronounce Saskatchewan right. I'm from there and it's always entertaining

Where I live I always here foreigners mispronounce words like "saguaro" or "Rio Grande," which I suppose is just because there are so many things named in Spanish here in Arizona. My favorite tho is when people say stuff like mo-jahv-eee instead of mojave or cactuses instead of cacti.

Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. That's just shortened. The real name is Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch.

Even we have to shorten it. Nobody can say that ****. It's not really a mispronunciation, but a "nobody-can-pronounce-it"-ation. People seem to also think the 'll' is pronounced as an 'l', but it's pronounced as the 'c' in 'clan'. (You sorta roll your tongue to say it, that's the noise.)

EDIT: It had to separate cause the word is too long lmfao, it's one word the gogogoch is attached.

I second this. I find it really funny that people who aren't Canadian cannot seem to pronounce Saskatchewan xD

Here in New Zealand we have the longest town name in the world.

Tetaumatawhakatangihangakoauaotamateaurehaeaturipukapihimaungahoronukupok.

It translates to "The summit where Tamatea, the man with the big knees, the slider, climber of mountains, the land-swallower who travelled about, played his nose flute to his loved one", according to wikipedia.

I've never heard it being said out loud before. Just don't even try to pronounce that. Don't even go there :p

My home region, most people's last names and many city and street names are French, so if you can't speak French...

It's not Nawlins. It's not New Or-LEENS. It's New OR-lens!

I find they always over emphasize the chewan when everyone here pronounces it like sask-atch-chew-win. Most foreigners pronounce it like sask-at-che-waaan. It's embarrassing.

My favorite part is when I convinced people outside of Canada that we live in igloos and ride Polar bears to work. Or that Saskatchewan is in a different part of the world, other than Canada.

i mispronounce all sorts of roads and cities here because my parents are foreigners and taught me everything wrong but its ok the kids in school bully my sense back into me .

I'm in Maryland and a lot of people say "r-hu-f" instead of "r-ou-f"... I've also heard people from other countries say it this way and it really bugs me!
