Connecting 3DS to DS lite to get Nookingtons on Wild World

Hey everyone,

As the ACWW wifi support has gone (and I have no friends who play WW) I have been unable to get the final Nook store upgrade, Nookingtons. It is really frustrating because I'd like to change my character's hair! I was thinking about buying a new DS (as they are so cheap now) and getting a new game to have the new villager buy something in my town.

But I just realised I may only have to buy a new game rather than the DS as well because I have a 3DS.

So my question is: Can I take a character from the 3DS WW to the DS WW to buy stuff from my DS town to unlock Nookingtons? Or does cross platform play not work?
