Corrupted travel data?

This happened while I was doing the 3 memory card trick to cycle unwanted villagers out, Instead of the "welcome back!" you usually get from travelling to and from a blank memory card, I was prompted to clear my blank memory card because it was corrupted. This lost my my inventory and kiki was basically voided, i was wondering if there was anything I could do to prevent this from happening in the future? I really don't want this to happen again and possibly loose a really important villager All 3 of my memory cards are 251 block.
I'm fairly new to ac forums in general and im just getting used to the gamecube console, so apologies if this has been answered before.

Are the memory cards officially licensed? And are you using a GameCube or a Wii? The Wii corrupts data on GameCube memory cards easier than an actual GameCube for some reason, and non 1st party cards are also less likely to have this happen (not that I've never experienced it with one)

I'm using a gamecube, I don't think the cards I use are 1st party so maybe i just got really unlucky haha
