henlo,

i've been practicing art a bit and hope to get much better in the future. considering most of my art is animal crossing based, i thought i'd make a thread of them! also i have nothing to do while waiting 83456 days for new horizons

  • i love to receive constructive criticism! if there's something i need to improve on, mention it in a reply! I don't mind peer critiques and would love to hear input from you guys. i'm only drawing as a hobby so i love learning how to improve my abilities.

self critique
1. i think the lines are too heavy
2. i can?t get shading quite right, especially with her fur. i can?t get it to look the way i want it to

Omg you drew a cutie patootie! She's adorable, I love the way you drew her!

As for lines, what do you mean by too heavy? Like too many black lines or too thick of lines? As for shading, I can't help out there, I too have trouble with that. I add 'shading' in areas like below somethin, like a chin or where I think shadows would be.

Overall this is just super cute and great work! I'd love to see more of your art :)

If you think the lines are too "thick" it may be that all the lines used are black. Something that I do when drawing is that I draw the lines a darker shade of the color that they're enclosing, if that makes any sense.

As for shading, it's just a thing that you have to tinker around with to get it right. Studying other drawings with shading is a good way to get a visual ref. I find that cell shading is easiest for me, but there's all different types!

Here's an example of one of my drawings that I did a while ago of Wendy, describing what I'm trying to convey. Notice the outline for the blue is dark blue, the outline for yellow is dark gold, etc. Also notice I outlined the scarf with black, though it's thin so it doesn't stand out too much.

In this case I used black lines to outline because the character isn't one concise color, and sometimes outlining one colorful section with black and another with a darker version of the outlined color doesn't look good, especially if the rest is pastel or another really light color. Using black is easier here, and using thinner lines is definitely a must if youre using black to outline. But it can look good!!

Another thing I might recommend is that you study anatomy. It's not really necessary when drawing Animal Crossing characters in the AC style, but it can allow you to add your own stylistic twists to your fanart!

I really like the art that you've done here, can't wait to see your future uploads! :)

i drew a moth villager!! i saw a picture of a rosy maple moth and had to draw a villager inspired by them!!

i’m struggling with shading and where to put it. i need more practice with light sources and shadows!

So cute, keep it up it looks great, but if you're looking for help with shading it might be a good idea to draw a simple work (Like a ball or somethin) and try with different lighting angles just to see what you can do.
