It's been over 60 blog entries since I came up with my last video game idea, even though I had several ideas for the next AC game throughout this whole time. Today, I'm going to go over a video game idea I have been working on before and went on hiatus about it.

Winter Island is a lot like the older platformers like Mario 64, DK 64, and many more of this category. The one thing about Winter Island is that the themes aren't necessarily mixed. Every level has the winter theme, but none of the levels are necessarily the same. It's all about geographical regions.

Items:

Throughout Winter Island, there are 7 types of major items, and 5 types of minor items. Major items are part of your collection as minor items are for replenishments.

  • Golden Snowflakes - these collectibles are the primary collectible of the game. they are used to unlock new levels and make Winter Island happier. There are a total of 150 golden snowflakes to collect in-game, but only 15 can be found in the hubs and 9 of the 10 levels.
    • 5 can only be obtained by your male player, 5 can be obtained by your female player, and the other 5 can be obtained by any.
    • If you collect 8 of the 15 in each level, you will unlock the boss stage.
  • Presents - they will be awarded when you defeat each level boss. If you get all three in one hub, you can access the next hub. The presents are actually parts that will help you gain access to the next hub.
  • Stockings - these items unlock mini-games in each level. There are three different colors in game, and if you collect all 10 of the same in one level, you unlock a mini-game.
  • Gold Coins - these items will unlock a special move if you collect enough. If you get enough and turn them in to Santa Claus, you learn a new move.
  • Tickets - these items will help you get medals of honor. One half is obtained by completing all the mini-games in each level while the other half is obtained by learning all three moves in each level.
  • Statue Pieces - every level has 20 hidden statue pieces. You can collect them to build a related statue to the level and earn a golden snowflake.
  • Medals of Honor - obtained by earning tickets. Each level, as well as the three hubs combined, has a medal of honor. All 10 of them are required to access the final boss level.
  • Cookies - your lost health regenerates over time, but collecting cookies will add points, which accelerates your regeneration.
  • Hot Cocoa - the female player has special athletic talents, and using them wastes your player's energy. Hot cocoa is the only item that can help regenerate the energy.
  • Ammo - while the female player is all about talents and melee with the stick weapon, the male player has a shooter weapon. Ammo is for refills for the shooter, as there are three types in-game.
  • Air Bubbles - since swimming underwater has no unlimited oxygen meter, you can replenish it by collecting hidden air bubbles.
  • Glider Energy Bobs - when you unlock the glider gadget, it requires energy to use. These items replenish your sky glider's energy.

There are some other items you have to collect as part of your quest.

Moves:

Before I go over this, every game you play, you have a male character and a female character. There are four teams of characters, each having two. You can only play as one team throughout the entire game. You can switch between the boy and the girl each time.

In this game, your male and female has some of the same basic movements, but the attack moves are different. The male characters have shooters which can take down flying enemies and hit wall switches out of reach. The females have sticks that are strong enough to use as weapons. They can also use them for other athletic abilities. But there are some special moves like gliding and swimming that both your male and female characters can use.

Levels:

There are 10 levels in this game, and only 3 hubs in total.

Hubs:

  • Cold Rock Shores - the first hub of Winter Island. It is the largest hub because it's the entire island besides the mountain. There are four regions based on cardinal directions from the mountain.
    • Christmas Town - one of the levels in the first hub. It's the first level you'll unlock in the game. Even though Santa Claus and a few other Christmas characters are seen throughout the entire game, this is the only Christmas-themed level.
    • Walrus Bay - another level in the first hub, and it's at the northern shores. It's greatly inhabited by walruses and harbor seals that interact with humans, but it also has a few human areas. One of the major landmarks in this level is the lighthouse.
    • Ice Station B - the third level in the first hub. It's a research station like Antarctica's and Greenland's research stations. This is sci-fi themed, but sill winter-like.
  • Pine Plateau - the second hub of Winter Island. It is a completely flat land somewhere high on the mountain. It is full of pine trees and has two caverns on the mountain edges of Pine Plateau.
    • Forest Town - one of the three levels in the second hub. It is 1800's themed, walled, and all houses are made of stone with some wood in the structure.
    • Frosty Woods - another level in the second hub. It's a fenced forest. Despite having a few campsites with log cabins, most of this level resembles the wilderness.
    • The Ice Caves - one of the caverns neighboring Pine Plateau is a rocky cavern that is mostly covered in ice. Full of platforms and chasms, with icy lakes at the bottom of each chasm.
  • Canyon Cliff - the last hub of Winter Island. It is on the heights of the mountain, but along a huge canyon named after one of the Antarctic seas and seals. There are four levels, but three of them are official and on one side of the canyon.
    • Weddell Canyon - one of the levels in the third hub. It's at the lower elevations of Weddell Canyon.
    • Snow Village - another level in the third hub. Every building is made of snow. It's within its own valley.
    • Aurora Summit - the third level in the third hub. It's at the highest point of Winter Island.
    • San Clause's Lair - the final boss level. It's more of a walkthrough - minus the collectibles.

Plot:

Winter Island is a happy place that is winter all year round. It is near the North Pole as the polar ice caps never cover this island. Residents of the island are even friendly to those who don't live there. However, it encountered a time that was not peaceful. One of Santa's elves, San Clause, wanted to replace Santa as the deliverer. He was fired, but replaced Santa at one time to get revenge. He was later defeated by the other elves and was put in jail.

After 20 years in jail, San Clause has escaped. He seeks revenge by taking over Santa Claus's favorite vacation spot - Winter Island. He and his servants haunted every location on the island. He wanted to warm it up to the point where it'll never be winter.

After the takeover, Santa Claus found 8 kids foreign to the island that wanted to help save the island. They worked together to find all the golden snowflakes and to defeat San Clause before Winter Island is ruined completely.

Bonus Features:

This game has bonus features too, which is old school, but a favorite of mine. Somewhere at the menu screen, you can play any mini-games you have unlocked, battle your friends in the arena, and watch any bonus movie and game cutscenes you have seen.

  • Cutscenes - movies that tell the game's plot. They are unlocked after progressing through these on your first time.
  • Bonus movies - movies that are based after the levels you unlock them in. Collect all 15 golden snowflakes in one level to unlock a bonus movie.
  • Two-player games - basically battle games or other two-player games. Each level has one two-player game related. To unlock a two-player game, you need to collect all 100 coins in each level.
  • Mini-games - games that you play in the real game. To unlock a mini-game, you have to complete it in the real game.

That wraps up this idea. When I had to come up with an idea for my Creativity Blog, this just popped up today. I have been working on this last year, and I decided to show it today as part of my Creativity Blog.

It's a terrible WiiWare game. PBG did a review on it and called it one of the worst games ever. It's terrible, trust me.

Whoa, you really thought this through, didn't you? :)

Yeah, I thought of this for a while. Maybe I should return to working more on this idea.

Also, I like your new avatar more. I don't like using site avatars.
