So how's this game?

I've been wondering if it's just mario party with animal crossing characters or is there anything special about it?

It's like a less fun version of Mario Party. It has cute visuals, but yeah...
Every turn, you just scan an Amiibo. There are no minigames.
Well, there are minigames, but they are not part of the board game at all and you have to unlock them.
There are small things you can do on the board besides rolling the die, but it's not really much compared to playing minigames in Mario Party.
I really only got the game because I found it for under $10 and it still had the Amiibo figures and cards with it.

Quick question: Does every amibo you roll the die with have to be an animal crossing amibo or any amibo

Probably a stupid question but yeah
The one that's your player character (Example: Isabelle.) would be what you keep scanning.
I know the cards can do something on your turn, but I forgot what.
But yeah, it pretty much only uses Animal Crossing Amiibos.

*sigh*
Nintendo just wanted some moolah.

This game is pretty simple and feels kind of targeted for very young players. It’s kind of cute and some of the activities are sort of fun but honestly I feel like it’s meant for a much younger audience and as an adult I find it kind of boring. It’s too bad because I was pretty excited about the idea of a new type of animal crossing game, but it just doesn’t have much going on for it in terms of enjoyment. I tried really hard to enjoy it and I spent the whole evening exploring all of its features and I just felt like I was wasting my time, which makes me feel a little bad but that’s just how it was for me. But if other people enjoy it I am very happy for them of course!

Shortly after it came out I was staying over at a friend's house and we rented it. If you really like the characters and charm of AC (esp ACNL) it's cute to see the cards that pop up with each space that show what sorts of things happen in their daily lives. Earning points on the Amiibo to unlock outfits was kind of fun too.

There's some minigames on there that are all right. My favorite was desert island escape but they added that in Welcome Amiibo. The quiz where you put your AC knowledge to the test was enjoyable too.

I had some fun in the brief time I spent with it but I'm sure that if I played it for much longer I would've gotten bored of it.

Cute, and I’m not willing to write it off completely because it justified making Amiibo and THAT justified the truly excellent Welcome Amiibo update. (No seriously, pretty sure they’ve said it exists because they wanted AC Amiibo.) But shallow, and you’d need significantly more Mario Party with some included minigames to make it a truly enjoyable game. Definitely the less interesting of the two Amiibo spinoffs.
