Customization mechanic -- how does it work?

I have already unlocked customization, and have customized quite a few items, all from DIY recipes. But it seems like I'm unable to customize items that I have bought/are not DIY.

Do you unlock the ability to customize all items later on? Or is it never an option, and you have to search for the specific colour scheme you want from other people?

You need to remember that not all items you buy/find are able to be customised! But you can definitely start customising as soon as you unlock it.

I know haha, but for example, I have a regular coloured picnic basket. I have seen this same item in many pictures, with different colour schemes (blue, pink and green I believe). I tried customizing mine, but it won't let me.

Same with the cuckoo clock. I have a red one, and saw folks with a green one. Simple kettle as well.
I just got a rice cooker that is red and has some kind of colorful rice on the inside, and I'm sure there must be the simple white cooker with plain rice as well?

This is baffling me too. I have a cat tower and pet food bowl and I'm almost positive I've seen them in other colors or video/pics of the customization screen for them at some point.

Oh, in that case it seems that these items will have a different 'default' colour for each player. I don't know why! But for those you'd have to trade with friends or buy from friends' islands?

From my experience, I'd second what mirrormirror is saying. It seems like some items are just different. Although, I've sworn I've seen two different colors of Public Seating in my shop, which makes me think that some items - while not customizable - might have a variety of colors available.

It's probably to stimulate people to play together. I personally don't mind so much; I think it's kind of a fun challenge to have to collect certain items this way. And I figure that in a couple of weeks it will be much easier to find everything here on the forums.

Basically, item colors seem to be assigned randomly like native town fruit and flowers. Very disappointing and stupid move, I think. As others have stated it seems to be to enforce trading between players, but im keeping my fingers crossed reese and cyrus make a comeback in an update.

If you manage to “unlock” different color variations by trading with others, you can press x while in your catalog to order it.

At least you can choose them after you catalogue. But still, customizing it makes sense, right?

Yes! I can confirm!

I had the yellow slip-on loafers to start off with. The next day, at the store, I found black slip-ons; the third day, white slip-ons. Similarly, I got a white accessories stand from a balloon one day, and the next day, a black accessories stand was in the shop.

Wallpaper flooring and accessories + clothing are not affected by this change, only furniture and furniture available via nook miles.

Id like to say maybe for balloons, but I havent been lucky as of yet. About villagers.. maybe, but I got two items that constantly appear a certain color in my shop from them and both times they were that color again.
