In short: resetting. Because most of the rare islands are unlocked after you've gone through those seasonal crafting materials already in game if you're using a newer character they won't be able to access most of them. And, if the game randomized your visit to go to a rare one that you don't have access to yet you automatically go to a regular island visit instead, no chance to roll again for a rare island you do have access to. But, you can always time travel to get around this.

I've never reset and get a rare island fairly frequently so it makes sense now why that is.

If someone already posted this please let me know I just woke up and tried to check but couldn't find anything on here.

Dang, and here I was hoping to stock up on some seasonal items and DIYs ahead of time. 😅 Shame that I got ACNH right after the cut-off for the star fragment island, too—although I'm not exactly sure why that one has a specific unlock date? Since shooting stars and star fragments are a year-round kind of thing, I don't really understand the reasoning behind that one.

Huh, that’s disappointing. What made those Islands valuable to me is precisely the fact that I haven’t experienced those seasons or gotten those recipes/items yet. If I have, then what’s the point? Not really that useful or special if it’s neither something new nor something I couldn’t get before.

Guess that explains some things. I'm a time traveler and, because I kind of stopped playing for a few months due to lack of content and my attention turning elsewhere, my island is currently in February. Since I want to play catch-up on all of the events/Nook kiosk item distributions that were brought in in 2021 (like Festivale, St. Patrick's Day, the prom stuff, etc.) and, despite playing this same island since launch last year, my island, by these metrics, isn't recognized as old enough yet. Looking forward to seeing the new stuff soon enough, I'll just know not to be disappointed by the same old islands I've been getting.

Forgot to add:
It’s extra frustrating that it (probably unintentionally) punishes people who don’t time travel—the exact people who would most benefit from experiencing seasons that aren’t their current one.

I've never reset my island and the best island Kapp'n sent me to was a glowing moss island :(

I have played pretty consistently since the game came out and haven't reset. That said I have so far found 2 rare islands-summer island and mushroom island(this island also had pinecones and acorns). I have found the glowing moss island twice and 2 farm islands(tomato and pumpkin). I have also found the normal gyroid fragment island a number of times. I never had much luck with the old mystery islands so I expected no different this time around. I'm not in need of any of the off season materials, I was actually hoping to find an island with carrots cause it's the only crop I'm missing. Although I would like to find the raining gyroids island as well. Also as an fyi the type of island you find determines the type of diy on the beach(farm island=food diy, moss island=moss or vine diy, seasonal island will get you a diy from that season etc).

So, when I start a new game, I may not see some of the new crops that Leif isn't selling until like a year later without TT?

I guess I’m just extremely unlucky. I’ve had both of my islands for over a year, and Kapp’n keeps taking me to the same exact island with orange trees and holly bushes.

The way I understand it is that the crops are all on “normal” Islands, so you should be able to find them now!

Good to know. I don't really care about the seasonal islands because I already have the diys and have a stockpile of materials. I feel like these islands should be for newer players -- to get the different flowers and materials. But, at the same time, I can see how some players may not want to be 'spoiled' by visiting an island with a season they haven't experienced yet, though I imagine that's the minority.

Understandable. It's a way to get difficult items for those that weren't lucky enough with balloons or those who couldn't play during those times- making them a way to skip doing the seasonal activities as normal would take away the point of doing those on the first place.

The only one I don't really get is the Star Fragments one lol

The date restriction only applies to the seasonal islands (Cherry Blossom + Spring Bamboo, Summer Shells, Maple Leaf + Mushrooms and Snowflake) and Star Fragments. You can still get all of the others.

Now that I think about, I haven't even seen an out of season island as well. I think it's summer now in the southern hemisphere, and all islands I've been to were summer islands.

I TT quite often and I got the star fragment island today. I've gotten the vine/moss island many times. I've had the game since launch but I'm getting lots of special islands. I'm not sure what the requirements for getting a special island. Its either a certain set of conditions or really bad RNG
