Decade to Year Conversion

Based on how fast time went, just four days of the month has passed. That is not very much. We’re still within the first week of the month, the first month of the year, and the first year of the decade. So it’s still early in the year.

Recently, I just thought of a decade to year converter. If one decade is the same as one year, we would be in the month of January, just like where we are in the year. However, if this same conversion applies, we would be in the month of January in the decade for most of 2020, even in July 2020.

When there are three leap years, here is the full conversion guide:

• January: 1/1/XXX0 - 11/5/XXX0
• February: 11/6/XXX0 - 8/12/XXX1
• March: 8/13/XXX1 - 6/18/XXX2
• April: 6/19/XXX2 - 4/15/XXX3
• May: 4/16/XXX3 - 2/19/XXX4
• June: 2/20/XXX4 - 12/15/XXX4
• July: 12/16/XXX4 - 10/21/XXX5
• August: 10/22/XXX5 - 8/28/XXX6
• September: 8/29/XXX6 - 6/24/XXX7

So if we were in the decade equivalent of January in the 2020s, it should be somewhere between the beginning of the year to just five days after Halloween. Now what if there are two leap years, like the 2010s decade? Here is the conversion guide:

• January: 1/1/XXX0 - 11/6/XXX0
• February: 11/7/XXX0 - 8/13/XXX1
• March: 8/14/XXX1 - 6/18/XXX2
• April: 6/19/XXX2 - 4/14/XXX3
• May: 4/15/XXX3 - 2/18/XXX4

However, not everybody believes that a new decade begins on a year ending with a 0. They believe a new decade begins on a year ending with a 1. This is correct, as the year is more like a journal date (like Year 2020) and not an age (like 2020 years ago). However, since there is a digit change, the year reflects off of the next decade and not the previous decade.

If a new decade begins on a year ending with a 1, here is the conversion guide when there are three leap years:

• January: 1/1/XXX1 - 11/6/XXX1
• February: 11/7/XXX1 - 8/12/XXX2
• March: 8/13/XXX2 - 6/18/XXX3
• April: 6/19/XXX3 - 4/15/XXX4
• May: 4/16/XXX4 - 2/19/XXX5
• June: 2/20/XXX5 - 12/16/XXX5
• July: 12/17/XXX5 - 10/22/XXX6
• August: 10/23/XXX6 - 8/28/XXX7
• September: 8/29/XXX7 - 6/24/XXX8
• October: 6/25/XXX8 - 4/30/XXX9
• November: 5/1/XXX9 - 2/24/XXX0
• December: 2/25/XXX0 - 12/31/XXX0

And when there are two leap years:

Now that’s it for the conversion guide, here are some sample dates from the last decade. On March 23rd, 2010, Obamacare was signed into law. My graduation from high school was on June 3rd, 2011. People thought the world was going to end on December 21st, 2012, but it was just an ordinary day. On June 9th, 2013, Animal Crossing: New Leaf was released. On February 13th, 2014, I turned 21. The first part of Back to the Future II took place on October 21st, 2015. On November 9th, 2016, Donald Trump won his presidential election. On August 21st, 2017, there was a total solar eclipse. April 1st, 2018 was one of the rare cases Easter landed on April Fool’s Day. And the Infinity-era Marvel movies came to an end on April 26th, 2019.

If the 2010s decade began in 2010, here would be the decade equivalents of each date:

• 3/23/2010 - January 9th
• 6/3/2011 - February 21st
• 12/21/2012 - April 19th
• 6/9/2013 - May 6th
• 2/13/2014 - May 31st
• 10/21/2015 - July 31st
• 11/9/2016 - September 8th
• 8/21/2017 - October 6th
• 4/1/2018 - October 29th
• 4/26/2019 - December 7th

Finally, here’s the conversion formula. In decades with 3 leap years, you multiply the fraction 365/3653 to the numeric value of the date for the decade, then you round up (not round down) to the nearest 1 value, then find the numeric value for the date of the year. The same should apply to decades with 2 leap years, but with the fraction of 365/3652 instead of 365/3653. For your information, the numeric value for each dates in the year are:

• January: 1-31
• February: 32-59
• March: 59-90
• April: 91-120
• May: 121-151
• June: 152-181
• July: 182-212
• August: 213-243
• September: 244-273
• October: 274-304
• November: 305-334
• December: 335-365

For the decade with 3 leap years, they are:
