I found finding a reference helps a lot.
For complicated add-ons such as a ribbon or folds, I will usually use 3-4 shades for the colour:
1. Lighter colour for highlights.
2. The base colour
3. Darker colour for shadow on the same layer.
4. Darker than 3 for shadow on the lower layer on the same colour.
