Did I ruin my save?

One of my villagers came to me saying they accidentally got someone else's mail and told me that I should deliver it to them. The problem is that I hated the other person, so I stole it and... sold it.

Now both characters are stuck in a dialogue loop. I only have options regarding the package delivery that I clearly do not have anymore. Am I screwed? Is there anything I can do? Are they both going to leave?

Help me, gamers.

SOLVED. On the third day (including the day I made the mistake) the villagers realized that I had failed to complete the task. They were frustrated with me, but they are back to normal!

if u wait a day it should be fine. but if its still there tomorrow then u mayhaps have a problem

edit: if u dislike the other villager and want them to move out, maybe u could try ignoring them?? ive heard ppl say it gets villagers to leave faster, tho i havent dont it myself (im about to tho bc i got c h o p s as my first camper im so mad)

uh,, o-o if u dont mind time traveling maybe u could go ahead another day or a week??? i dont really know as i havent experienced this problem before,, if its not fixed by then or if someone else gives u advice and it doesnt work u may have to actually restart ur save or get the glitched villagers to move out via amiibo villagers.

Weird, in past games they’d know if you opened a letter/gift that was meant for another villager. Hopefully they fix this in a future update.

If it does not clear up by the third day I would recommend contacting Nintendo to report the issue and see if they can do anything about it.

I'd be very surprised if your save is ruined and it won't fix itself. Surely Nintendo would have considered how potentially possible this scenario is.

You shouldn’t have to wait 3 days to get new dialogue from a villager. Report it to Nintendo whenever you get the chance. It’s something else they overlooked trying to stick to the 3/20/20 release date.

It looks like all their contact lines are down right now aside from phone and I don't wanna call them over it.

Alright. On the third day, the NPCs responded to the fact I failed to deliver the item. All is good again.

Depending on the time of day, they'll say "It's late, so if you want to wait until tomorrow, that's fine". So definitely could be the case.
