I just picked up my first one from a second hand shop downtown. I started looking into it and it seems to be a big deal to some. It is apparently difficult to avoid fakes.

My first pin has a date of 2006, it is the Queen of Hearts from the animated version of Alice in Wonderland, with a silver Mickey symbol on it. I got that one not only because it was the last one left, but also due the resemblance to an angry former boss I happened to outlast. I'd like to know if it is a fake. Is there any interest in these things here?

I use to collect them. It just took up a lot of space and I just lost interest in Disney.
I ended up giving them to someone or put them in a yard sale, can't remember.
Looking back, I probably should of marketed some of the better ones, like a cruise pin.
I think I still have my favorite one sitting around, it's the castle in gray with a night background.

I started a "pin collection" when I was a kid and my oldest pin as far as I know is from 2005 since it has the year as an integral part of the design. he pin is a Mickey head and has Tinker Bell on it too. I filled up my lanyard back then and recently found it in my room. It's as heavy as I remember lol. I don't think this is the ideal place to find other pin collectors (or verify merch authenticity) though.

Also, I do agree that it would be difficult to avoid fakes---there are counterfeit items for so many hobbies that involve collecting things. Disney memorabilia is pretty popular globally so there are many people looking to make some ""easy"" money on nostalgia and whatnot.

It is difficult to say if it is a fake or not on description alone, but based on the date of the pin I would say it is authentic. I have been collecting pins, especially disney, since 2002. I have scaled back on the hobby as I have grown older but it is still fun for me. They usually have some great pins up for trade at the Disneyland and Disneyworld parks!

Oh yeah, you don't even know that half of it.

First of all, pin trading in Disney is still a thing. Certain stores will have a pin trading board, cast members will wear a pin trading thingy, and I'm not sure if this is still a thing, but for a few years there were conventions held just for pin trading.

I've been looking up youtube videos I've noticed a few fanatical collectors using terms I don't know yet. I know to avoid the pin lots on ebay.

I did single Aladdin pin off ebay for cheap. 2016, it says "Diamond in the rough". It looks legit, even has the Disney parks backer card. A youtube person mentioned something about a border around the waffle pattern on the back.

If you ever want legit stuff, just go to a Disney character premier store and ask if they trade pins there. Chances are they might. I know the one I used to go to had an entire board for it.

I casually collect the monorail, friendship boat pins, the parking lot signs and any other ones I like, like Oswald. I never buy my pins.

Honestly I haven't been in one of these parks since the Hunchback of Notre Dame was being made, but I will keep that in mind.

Are these things supposed to be scented?

I've never seen (or smelled) a scented pin. That might just be that 'new pin smell' they get when some of them come out of the baggie. \?~?/

Where I live atleast, there's a few stores that I can go to for Disney stuff like that. Basically Disney will send their stuff to these stores if they don't sell well in the parks, or if they have alot of it. I did get a shirt from one of these stores that even as I walk around in the parks, I have yet to see literally one person wear it. It's a really cool shirt too.

But you don't have to go in the parks to trade pins. Usually the stores are in malls and stuff.

Oddly Aladdin has a subtle scent that might be vanilla, or what holiday candles use to smell like Christmas cookies.

Lol you said you got it from eBay, so maybe that's what the person house smelled like. Must have been really strong if the smell stayed on the pin.
