Do beetles only show up on island?

First time posting a thread here ....
I haven't seen very many beetles or other rare bugs in my town with the exception of a tarantula. Same problem with fishing. In all my hours spent I would think I'd see something ya know? It's all just common butterflies and sea bass! Yuck.

So do the especially rare things only show up on the island or are they just much harder to find?

You're just having poor luck. I've caught plenty of the "island stuff" in my town these past days.

Still have to meet a tarantula, though.

No idea, I don't have New Leaf YET, but if no one has replied by the time I get it I'll be sure to let you know.

They are more common on the island because the ratio of palm trees to other bug attracting objects is much greater on the island than in town.
