In previous titles, villagers had a lot more personality, were more exuberant, were funnier and quirkier and were just funner to talk to in general. Even in their houses, the way that the villagers expressed their personalities was much more... Well there was just more personality. For example, in Population Growing, every single villager had a unique wallpaper and flooring and a lot of them even had gyroids in their houses. Some villagers still have unique housing set ups, but I don't know, it's just not the same. My startup villagers all have no wallpaper, no flooring and only have a bed and like a butterfly in a glass jar. It's just like... Okay... You know?

Not to sound like I'm being too hung up on the past, but I feel like it was def better back then generally speaking and I miss it. Does anyone else feel like this?

Don't get me wrong tho, there are amazing new things that the older versions didn't have. I enjoy villagers coming into my house. That's pretty cool. And I like how they'll sometimes just give you random stuff, thinking you asked for them but then saying you can have them anyways haha.

Yes, the dialogue from previous versions (specially GCN and WW) was better written and a lot more funny/interesting. I liked how Snooty and Cranky villagers were initially mean and then as your friendship increased they would soften up and be more kind. Now they all love you unconditionally since they first meet you, which is a bit boring.

I know right. Why'd they ruin ittt lol

I prefer lazy dialog from new leaf over what's in new horizons. I prefer the jock a littler from new leaf too.
I just hate the bug talk. The way they do it doesn't even sound like they are just into bug collecting. Many times it sounds like an infestation or flea problem and it's just kinda depressing. Plus I always feel like I have to gift them bugs to "make me feel better" about thier dialog. Oh you have butterflies vs cockroaches and termites.
Jocks, the sweat stuff is nasty. No one wants to hear the description of sweat smell mixed with x.
But jocks aren't as bad as lazies. I also liked the phrase ladybro from jocks in new leaf. New leaf also has jocks play games with you more often like hide and seek. I'm glad the pings for that are less frequent in new horizons because when you are doing stuff to your island that can be annoying but it's so rare to play a game with your villager.

The first 5 villagers all specifically don’t have their actual houses but instead have basic houses to show them just starting out like the player. That’s a specific aspect of the game and their ‘real’ houses are different. every villager in the game has a unique house design - even though I know people find ways to justify how they are unique in the ‘wrong way’ (I get that it is subjective yes) or ‘not unique enough’. if you get past the tutorial the villagers will have their actual houses. There are 400+ villagers now, so there are bound to be similarities though. That doesn’t particularly bother me.

I like the personalities and dialogue of the villagers as they are now,m. The villagers are my favorite part of the game.

Lmaoooooooo. I feel you. Hahaha ladybro; I love that! And wait a minute, WHAT? YOU CAN PLAY HIDE AND SEEK WITH THEM IN NEW LEAF? THAT'S FIREEE. AND THEY TOOK THAT AWAY IN NH? I don't believe this man... Ughhhh lol

Eh to each their own lol. Did you ever play Population Growing? Maybe it's just kind of a pet peeve to those who have experienced the earlier games and got a vastly better experience in certain areas. And you said you get their actual houses after the tutorial but I've been playing for a few months now, have most of everything unlocked and Rudy still has no carpet, no wallpaper, just a bed and 2 butterflies which I think I gave him lol. And he's my favorite villager too. It'd be nice to have his normal layout there. I get that they're just starting out too but it's been months now. This just doesn't make sense for them to still be "struggling" lol

Man I miss Population Growing. I fired it up again last year to check, talked to Tutu, and she's like, "Hey you know my Gameboy that I asked you to get back 132 months ago? Well I already got it myself since you took so long so forget it!" and I can't tell you how hard I laughed.

I feel you. And lmaoooo. That game has such an incredible vibe. Even tho there's significantly less stuff in that game compared to New Horizons, I feel like I could still play it and enjoy it deeply and in a meaningful way. I have a ritual where I play my favorite games every few years or so to re-experience the vibes I felt when I first played them and Population Growing is 100% one of those games. I don't really know if New Horizons will be though. I'm having fun with it and it's really enticing me in many ways, but it's all mostly mental honestly. It doesn't reach my spirit as much as Population Growing did. That's why I'm really hoping they make some updates to fix the things that are causing this, because if they did, New Horizons honestly would go from being a great game to honestly kind of legendary in my view.

I definitely miss the personality from the original game. Some were just ruthless and I feel like that's what the game needs again nowadays!

I hear people complain about villagers not having much of a personality or interesting dialogue in NH but I also hear the same people complain about how sisterly villagers are rude to you if you speak to them twice in the same day, how Sahara is rude and blunt when she is selling you stuff, etc. so honestly not entirely sure what people really want. Feels more like a "the grass is always greener on the other side" situation to me.

I personally like the new take they took with the dialogue in NH but I also know that the code for the dialogue was kinda janky the first year or so as a lot of the everyday dialogue got repeated instead of more unique and interesting ones being used. Seems like they've sorta fixed that now though.

I don't mind their personalities now (especially normals, they're so kind and honestly sometimes they say stuff I really need to hear) but I just wished there was more dialogue. I know they kept adding more and changed more with the update so hopefully it'll make it more interesting. I know some of the villager types used to be really mean, which personally, I'm glad they're not anymore. I play AC for stress relief so I don't need villagers being hateful or resetti calling me an idiot lol

Well I don't remember if it has been taken away in NH. It's been months since I played I just started a new Island. But if the game was something that happened a decent amount of times I should remember it. If it is there it simply doesn't happen very often at all. In new leaf they kind of just hide behind a tree or building and peek out and there are about 3 villagers that you have to find.

Snooty is my least favorite personality. I don’t miss them at all being rude. Sometimes people are sensitive to these types of things.

Not really, I wish they'd just have more dialogue. I kind of wish Crankys and Snootys would be initially mean since it would give you a feeling of progression and becoming better friends with them, though, but I don't really mind the way they are now.

What I definitely don't like very much is the stuff Lazys say. It feels much less expressive and more repetitive.

it’s been pointed out already, but the startup villager houses are like that because it’s part of the tutorial; if you want their unique house design, just report their decor to Isabelle and it’ll reset.

and honestly, i think the villagers (at least now with the various dialogue additions 2.0 & hhp have added) have plenty of personality. while i would like to see certain personalities (snooty, cranky) return to needing to warm up to you, PG was far too mean to use as a comparison point regarding dialogue — I feel like this is a discussion that this forum has like once a week at this point — and that the NH villagers are fine as they are with the updates & adjustments they’ve gotten.

I'm pretty sure this doesn't exist in NH. This hasn't happened to me at all. Why would they get rid of something like that? Smdh lol.

Did they? Hm maybe they did and I just haven't really noticed because I've been so used to how it was previously. I defintely still hear them repeat the same dialogue they've been repeating since before the update over and over again tho. There might be some new ones I'm not realizing are new tho.

Hide and seek isn’t in NH. There is a game where you find an item they will hide.

Personally I prefer villagers from the older games. I liked that my villagers didn’t immediately think I was amazing. Although this problem didn’t begin in NH, for me it began in NL but I think NH has it worse. Peppys are so irritating in NH. All Tangy and Rosie talk about is being pop stars. Every single day. Cranky villagers I find to be way too sweet, lazies are bug obsessed and normal villagers talk a lot of their parents. I know why Nintendo toned it down but the older dialogue was more varied for sure.

The room interior does bother me. Nan was my 4th villager and she has basic wooden furniture. Almost two years later it would make sense she changed her furniture. I have gifted her furniture but the only thing she displayed is a Halloween pumpkin which is still there.

Exactly on pretty much every single thing you said. Took the words right out of my mouth.

i never played the original animal crossing, but i definitely miss how the villagers were in wild world. i miss the dialogue, them having unique hobbies and interests that could change and when they didn’t act like we’re best friends immediately. i miss when friendship progression wasn’t just them giving you nicknames, asking you to change their catchphrase, giving you their photo, etc but when it was also them noticeably softening up to you over time (especially the snooty and cranky villagers); that was really nice. :’)

It’s THE thing I miss the most from previous games. I never played the Game cube version of AC, but I started with WW, and it’s still my favorite. I think that the community is always asking new things because of the lack of personality when it comes to villagers, and it won’t be solved with more items or a new activity. While playing WW you are eager to talk to the villagers because it’s fun, unexpected and sometimes even mean. You want to be around them to build a stronger relation and progress with the friendship. New Leaf was the worst when it comes to dialogues but NH made some very poor choices: crankies are never cranky, let alone mean, snooty are a copy paste of normal villagers, they are just a bit more elegante and I still wonder why they made lazies so insufferable, with the “I talk to the bugs” dialogue. Honestly, if I could copy paste the villagers personalities and dialogues from WW to NH, then it would be the perfect game but until then, it won’t.
