There have been many great gimmicks throughout the series, but sadly new games tend to feature new things and remove old ones. What features from the old games (that weren't in New Leaf) would you like to see return in the next Animal Crossing?
I can think of a big one right away: SIGNS. The signs NEED to return. Not only did they provide helpful information, they also let you know exactly where a villager might put his/her house down should they move in. You could build AROUND the signs so if you got a move-in, they wouldn't throw down right on top of your garden. If the PWPs make a comeback, maybe you could remove some of the signs and place them where you want, but there would have to be ten no matter what. It would be amazing imo.
I'd also like those passcodes from the original to return. I've never actually played the original (though I've owned it for years), but I've read all about the codes. You could talk to Tom Nook (or maybe a new NPC) and say a certain code to unlock sets and items, most of which were not obtainable elsewhere. Instead of DLC at the Post Office, Nintendo could send letters with the codes and you could talk to whoever to unlock special items.
That being said, all of the items from the Gamecube version should definitely return. The clothes, special items, and even assorted handheld items should return. I'm talking about those NES games (maybe DS games now?) and the garbage that played Resetti's theme when you interacted with it.
ALL villagers should return. Why were they removed/left exclusive to the E+ version? Everyone needs to make an appearance!
I'm sure there are tons of other things, but that's all I got for now.
