Does anyone wish we could actually talk to mom?

I’m wondering who else wishes they could actually respond to their mom? She writes us letters all the time, but don’t you ever want to write letters to her, as well? I’ve always felt some type of way, and it sucks not being able to respond to her letters. It makes me feel like I’m ignoring her. I’d like to be able to write her letters and get responses in the mail. How do you feel about your in-game mom? Do you find her annoying or do you like the concept? I really like the concept. I love those mom’s plushies! I have a bunch customized to Puppers. 😅

I like the letters because it gives off a cosy, homely feel to it.

However I never want to actually interact with her.
I think it would ruin it quiet a bit.

I cant quiet explain it but I think if she was to become like more of a real character that you had more interaction with, there wouldn't be warm caring vibes. She would be just like anyone else.
It would also feel like the player character has more of a defined back story which I wouldn't like.

I think she works best as she does now, just a caring parent checking in on you occasionally.

part of me wishes we could send her letters just sort of updating her on vague aspects of her life, but I almost wouldn't want her to directly respond to what we say if that makes sense, because then like Moritz says she becomes more of a 'real' character and there is less left open to your imagination and interpretation. any kind of proper interaction with her, whether through letters or even face to face, would shatter the illusion that's been built up around her and i fear people would be disappointed that she's not as they imagined her to be.
it's a cute idea though!

I definitely see where you’re coming from. I understand how if we were able to reply it would be like the connections we have to the villagers.

i definitely wish we could interact with her. she seems sweet, caring and reliable, the inner child in me longs for her ; w ;

i’ve honestly never really thought about it. on one hand, i’ve always found her letters to be sweet and being able to respond to her would be nice but on the other, i genuinely have no idea what i would even say to her if i could lol. like, actually being able to respond to her would change our interactions with her quite a bit and while i don’t think that would be a bad thing, i think i prefer our relationship with her being open to interpretation and having her be a sort of side character who cares about you without any obligation, if that makes sense. >_<

I think this is a great point. It might indeed ruin the warm fuzzy vibe you get from knowing she's just checking on you. On the other hand, it might be neat to have her be sort of like a power-up, kind of like how in Pokémon if you talk to mom, she heals your Pokémon lol. If you interact with her in AC, maybe she sends you something extra, idk. But then it might just become another "daily task" to check off your list, which would go back to your original point. It's a fun idea to consider, but in the end, I think I'm glad they made it how it is.

Amen! I've always wondered what she looked and sounded like and where she lives! Dad too for that matter!

Great comparison, referencing the mother in Pokémon games! I can definitely see there being an incentive for interacting with her in Animal Crossing, kind of like how you receive certain items depending on how many flights you take with DAL. I think it’s a cool idea to think about, but it might be better with how it currently is. You shouldn’t fix what isn’t broken, after all.

Kinda. I think it would be cool if the mom concept was the same as it is now, an untouchable, invisible, un-interactable NPC who occasionally sends us gifts. But I think it would be super cool to send mom pictures of our island. She checks in on us and updates us about her life, so sending pics in the mail of our island life would be cool, imo. Like hey mom look what I made.

that'd be so great for my NH oc, penny ^^

Ive never really thought of that, but being able to talk to mom would be nice. Maybe also help her to stop waving at planes, her arm is probably sore

Id like to say thanks for all the cakes, since my villagers seem overly excited when I give them cake. So Id like to thank her for that.

Reading any ingame's mom's letter never used to affect me. It was just like any other game aspect, it was just there and a way to get cool items (plushies, fruit, currency). It becomes different when you lose a parent in real life and as silly as it seems, any lovely written letter from your ingame mom/dad can be devastating. So no, I would not like to be able to talk to an ingame parent when it's not possible to do so in real life anymore.

But as a kid, it'd just a gimmick and a cool function.

Edit: spelling mistake.

No. She works as a nice personal touch to your character and a slight backstory to them. It's very subtle. I don't feel connected to this character enough to write back. Part of it is the items she sends us which I personally don't care for. They're cute in an ugly way because they're sort of haphazardly made but IRL, I don't like handmade gifts. I'd rather take a gift card/money than some knitted mittens. I don't mind the sweaters and aprons but everything else is.. unappealing to me.

No I enjoy Mom being this enigma that could be anything you want it to be. Leaving Mom as something left to the players imagination is one of the many things that the creators got right. Let's leave Mom where she is Imagination Land. LOL
