I can't find anything via Google or a forum search for this, so hopefully it's not something already known. I'm curious: Does sending mail to a villager prevent them from moving?
I have two player characters on my copy of New Leaf: Chris (the mayor) and Stephanie.
A couple of weeks ago, Joey told Chris he'd like to move. I accidentally said said he could go. I didn't want to lose him, but since I had said he could go, I decided to go through with it. When I played as Stephani that same day, Joey told her he was planning to move. I went ahead and had Stephani thank him for letter her know.
The next day, I decided to have Stephani write Joey a long farewell letter (contents irrelevant), and I took it to the post office that day. Later that day, Joey told Stephani he was having second thoughts about moving. I chose "You'll be fine," and Joey got mad, saying Stephani didn't know him well enough, so he was staying.
Now, just yesterday, Graham was saying to Stephani that he'd like to move on to another town. I went ahead and said he should go (and said the same when playing as Chris). However, after saying so as Stephani, I addressed a letter to Graham. I didn't write anything, and I didn't send it off, I just held on to it.
Today, Graham told Stephani he was having second thoughts. When I said he'll be fine, he decided he would stay after all. When I played as Chris later, Graham said Stephani talked him into staying.
I realize correlation does not imply causation, but perhaps there's a relation? I don't time travel, but perhaps someone who does can fill their mailbox with unsent letters to their villagers, then time travel like crazy and see if there's a correlation between mail on hand and who does or does not move out?
