Now that I have both the Nintendo 64 doubutsu no mori and the GameCube doubutsu no mori + (the game that later got additions and localized into Animal Crossing), I can very truly say after playing them, plus is NOT a port of doubutsu no mori, not by ANY comparison!! There are so many additions made to doubutsu no mori to make it + that calling it a port of doubutsu no mori is like calling doubutsu no more e+ a port of doubutsu no mori +!! Here's why.

Doubutsu no mori is VERY limited, not only on the lower powered Nintendo 64, with the lack of a clock, but also the cartridge holds like a 100th the amount of the GC disc. As such, there is a clock in it, but every time you play, you have to tell the animal what the day/time is, otherwise you'll literally pick up right where you left off, even if it's been decades since you last played. Time runs while you play, just not while it's off.

Next, there is no museum, no Able's shop, no island, and you can NOT anger/annoy the animals by shoving/hitting them- literally nothing happens! Travelling is a pain in the butt too, because unlike the Game Cube to visit another town you have, all you needed was a memory card, but since the game is stored on the cartridge, you need a SECOND CARTRIDGE TO VISIT!! I was able to get Tanuki in + to open by creating a second town on another memory card, travel to my main town, shop, leave, done. In doubutsu no mori, I have to buy another freaking game cartridge- just like in Wild World and New Leaf (both were Wi-Fi, but pretend there is no internet to connect to, and you see the issue).

They didn't simply take doubutsu no mori and port it over to the GameCube, there are too many additions to it, just like e+ isn't a port of +, way too much added/changed, since e+ is a localization of Animal Crossing back into Japan, with even more content added like waking up Nook after closing, having Kapp'n always there without a Game Boy Advance attached, more dialog, etc.

In the end, I can safely say after playing doubutsu no mori and doubutsu no mori + that they simply didn't port doubutsu no mori to the GameCube and call it +, they truly added new content, options, etc, making it more of an enhancement than a port, by FAR!!!

Thanks for the write up! I've always been very interested in Animal Forest, e and e+. Someday I'd love to have the means to play them -- e+ is definitely the one that intrigues me the most.
