because visiting dream addresses and having one of your own requires the internet, and you need to have a nintendo switch online membership (which costs money) in order to have access to online play and features in switch games. this includes the dreaming feature, and being able to visit other people’s islands (unless you visit them through local play, which doesn’t require internet) in new horizons.
