I haven't heard of this one...what's it about?
It's a dungeon crawl RPG. If you've ever played the old gold box SSI games, Bards Tale games, or Wizardry then the setup will be relatively familiar. You see things from a first-person perspective and each step you take (using the d-pad) is a square on a large grid. Mapping out this grid is essential to the game. The top screen is your character's view and the bottom screen is used for mapping out the dungeon.
There are 25 floors (plus an extra five after you beat the game)--all of which are pretty large and take a good deal of time to explore fully. So essentially you map out each floor fighting monsters as you go. You can field a party of 5 characters from 7 or 8 different classes. Characters in this game are somewhat like some SRPG's in that they don't really have any story associated with them. You give them names and start them from scratch. Each class has various skills associated with it that you can boost as you gain levels.
The beauty of the game (to me) is the mapping which is really fun and addictive as well as the strategy associated with getting the right mix of characters in your party. It's possible to have many different configurations and it's a lot of fun seeing how far you can get with different setups.
I had a blast with it. It's a lengthy and challenging RPG. If, however, you're expecting something like Final Fantasy or other traditional Japanese RPGs ... don't.
There's not a whole heck of a lot of story going on. There is an overall thread, to be sure, but for the most part the story doesn't really factor into the game all that much. To be honest, though, it's hardly a knock on the game as the gameplay is
so solid. It's definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but I loved it.
