Only when my BFF saw Graham on my island and was like, "You have Graham? I'm so sorry..." Lol, she meant well, but it bummed me out a bit because I love Graham!
Anyway, I'm kind of surprised to see how many people hear do apparently (even secretly) judge people for their villager tastes? I don't get that AT ALL. The point of having so many villagers is EVERYONE can have favorites. Even if I see someone who has only the most popular villagers, I don't judge. I may chuckle to myself and think, "That's funny" or "That's cute" but not in a judgmental way.
Of course, Raymond appears to be getting villainized here, because he's basically the most popular villager right now. But... so what? I mean, if you have him on your island because you love him... cool! If you have him on your island because he's popular... equally as cool! Seriously, why would anyone care? Even if it's just because he's popular, if it makes that person happy to have him, why on earth would you judge someone for that? How does it affect your life in any way?
The closest I come to feeling that way is when people come down hard on certain species for being “ugly” and “horrible.” I truly like the gorillas, anteaters, mice, cows, and hippos! I think they have some of the most unique, charming models and I admit I feel a little defensive when they are ridiculed. Perhaps because Nintendo does seem aware of fan preferences and a little part of me is always afraid my favorites will be cut to appeal to the cutesy-pastel subset of the fandom. Their preferences are just as valid as mine! But I really like having less conventional options and now that NH has toned down most of its non-cute clothing and furniture, I’m hoping all the villagers get to stick around.
That is valid. I mean, I'm not really that afraid of them cutting my favorite villagers, because there are plenty of others, and I think there's a 0% chance will cut any from the actual game (that seems like a lot of work for absolutely no reward besides making some people angry, and how would they handle people who already had said villagers?)- maybe they won't be included in the next game, but I'm guessing that's years away. I also don't fully agree they've taken out a lot of the non-cute stuff.
But I DO agree that I hate when people bash villagers or species or personalities or whatever in general.. I don't really like seeing anyone bash anything, really (short of really awful things like murder or racism or stuff like that). I guess I got so used to having my interests bashed for so long as a kid that my first thought is always "Even if YOU don't like it, someone else probably loves it." I mean, it really sucks to have your favorite things bashed. It feels like a piece of yourself is being judged. People can say, "Oh, I'm just judging their TASTES, not THEM." but, seriously. C'mon. Personal tastes are part of a person. They're part of what make us all unique. People often feel really invested in things that appeal to them, things they relate to. If you're judging and bashing those things, OF COURSE a lot of people are gonna take that personally. It's one thing to say, "Nah, that's not really my favorite villager." or "I don't really listen to that band much." (or, in my case, any band... but that's another story). It's another to say, "Wait, you like THAT villager? Oh my gosh, they're so ugly and stupid! I'd probably reset if they tried to move onto my island!" or something to that affect. One is a neutral statement, not passing judgment. The other is unnecessary and can hurt feelings. It's just not cool. That's why, whenever I don't like something... I just say I don't like it, maybe give a few reasons why it personally bothers me (for instance, Barold's face is a little too human looking for my tastes- but that's just me), but I don't get nasty about it. There's just no need.
