Ever feel judged for who you have?

I never even thought about that, so no. The idea of being personally judged for what kind of colourful animals I have in a video game seems kind of bizarre to me. On the other hand, no one knows anything else about me, so I guess it could be used as a criteria to judge my character. Still, it is not the kind of judgement that I would take seriously. Now, if the question is whether or not I felt like my villagers were being judged, sure, absolutely. I usually don't take personal offence with that, though. I prefer opinions being expressed in a kind manner and I don't like generalizations (e.g. "that villager is ugly" instead of "I don't like that villager"), but otherwise it doesn't bother me whether people like my villagers or not.

i sort of assume people judge me for some of my choices... some of the ones i like are not the most popular - although like... i really really don't understand why!! i would have thought Eugene would have been way up there but it seems like people don't really like him that much : (

and i assume they have their assumptions about why i like or want certain villagers. Raymond, for example - people would probalby just assume anyone who wants raymond wants him for clout or because he's popular, but i like because he reminds me of one of my deeply beloved d&d characters and that makes me happy! and, my first impressions of him were him saying something incredibly goofy in the museum on a friend's island i visited, so there's that : P

but ultimately i don't really care what other people think! let them judge if they want; i'm gathering the villagers that make me happy, and they don't live on my island so its not really any of their business anyway <3 and if someone was gonna be rude or snarky or negative about it then i'd probably just ignore them. i don't have time for negativity in my life, especially not in relation to video games : P

but thankfully it seems like 99.9% of the people up here are really sweet and polite, so that's not much of an issue!! <3

I see Raymond's name mentioned a lot here 👀 Is Raymond the new Marshal?

Honestly, people are going to like what they like. Some people are going to like certain villagers because they're popular and then some people will like them just because they like them. I don't see why anyone would offend or get offended over who picks what and who likes who.

That being said, stop hating on my man Coach. He's such a man cow!!! But for real, there are a lot of villagers that I think are unattractive from looks or personality or a combo of the two.

Marshal? his appearance is CUTE but his personality sucks and he is way overrated which makes him undesirable in my eyes. Judy is SCARY looking in my opinion. I thought I liked her at first, but her expressions were too much for me. Do I care that you like them? nahhh you do you! Get your favorite villagers and live your best island life!

I think a lot of the negativity comes from people who really do care about their villagers and game and really feel close to their villagers, so to say something rude to their faves is like saying something rude to them personally. I think that gets lost on a lot of people. Also, everyone has their own opinions and as long as everyone involved can express their opinions without being hurtful or spiteful then everyone should be mature enough to have a discussion without getting hurt.

Just have who you want on your island and stop caring what everyone else thinks!! If Rilla is your girl then that's great and if Raymond is your man than that's cool too.

This is kind of a weird one, but i find it weird and slightly annoying when people imply that people who like popular villagers are either shallow or ‘choose based on looks’ while people who like unpopular villagers (which is apparently me) are somehow less shallow and ‘look beyond appearance’. I realize this is usually said as if it is a compliment, but it feels like a weird sort of backhanded remark, and sometimes seems similar to the comments (which seem to be very rare here, at least) that people who like less popular villagers are faking somehow or morally superior (or trying to be morally superior) to those who like popular villagers, both of which bother me. I think in part it is the idea that there is some objectively cuter villagers, which is simply not true.

It sounds weird to ask to be called shallow, but my love for Tabby (and my other villagers) is every bit as shallow as that of the people who adore Raymond because of his design (unclear on if the fabled people who like Raymond just because he is popular are a reality or a myth, but it seems like most people just like him cause they like him). I think tabby is adorable and lovely and perfect, and that is why I like her. Looking at her makes me happy.

Basically, like most people have been saying, I think people like who they like popular or not, and no preference has any sort of moral high ground.

Like some others, I do find dream islands that have uncommon (ie unpopular) villagers to be a draw when choosing where to visit. Not because I think it is bad to have the more common villagers, but because part of the fun for me is being able to see and interact with a variety of villagers to see how I like them.

however, I think you should not choose villagers based on what the theoretical ‘audience’ wants. It is your island, and you are ultimately designing everything only for yourself. So like who you like!

Not really. I don’t think I have villagers that people would comment on.
( Mathilda, Roscoe, Raddle, Cole, Rodeo, Nan, Agnes, Curt, Avery ).

they aren’t popular villagers, but they aren’t ugly either ( at least I don’t think).

The only questionable one I have is Barold when I bring him over occasionally. I don’t mind what people say about him though, because I love him 😍

That logic makes zero sense, I agree. Someone choosing Raymond because of his looks is just as shallow as me choosing Cesar for the same reason. There’s way more villagers than personality types so we all choose based on looks.

Nope, I don't care. I get attached with my villagers and I won't get rid of any of them.

I have Marina and Julian who i think are both somewhat popular. I also have Groucho who I think is the coolest looking dude ever. I get attached to everybody.

Hmmm... I don't think so. I have an assortment of villagers: some sought-after like Audie, some average like Rolf, and some unpopular like Buzz. I also never experienced any villager-related judgment since I played the game.

Besides, I think one should not be concerned with villagers someone else has. It's not like their villagers will affect the way you play. You're just giving yourself unnecessary emotions. 🤷‍♂️

I remember back in the New Leaf days someone called me basic for having Bob and Marshall. I think if I had rolled my eyes any harder I would have rolled into another dimension.

I would comment on your villagers because Roscoe, Raddle and Nan are some of my favourites 🖤

I have literally never had an opinion about the villagers other people have, so I’ve never even thought of someone having an opinion about the villages I have. Seems like a really silly thing for someone to judge someone else for!

I've had the same all-bear-cub island for a year. I love them all too much to ever let any of them go! I've seen other people with bear cub islands and every comment I've gotten about it has been positive. So no, I've never felt any judgement.

BTW, Pudge is my absolute favorite!! (Don't tell the other cubs.)
Pudge is so cute and super underrated

No, I don't feel judged for any of the villagers I have, nor do I judge anybody for the villagers they have. All that matters to me is whether or not I like them, since I'm the only one who makes decisions about who is on my island at the end of the day.

i have my residents because i just love them, like wendy, pudge.. even though they are not really popular i really love them because theyre like the cutest villagers ever lol.

also, people in pokemon community keep asking to me like "why you have emolga??? its not good for battles!!!" lol. i really love emolga and its my favorite pokemon ever. i dont really care about battles, gyms are pretty easy

I honestly haven’t! Probably because I tend to gravitate toward unpopular villagers, but rarely the ones that get a sort of “meme” treatment because people find their designs SO unpleasant. Like in New Leaf, I loved Benjamin, Willow, and Walt, to name a few. Not villagers that ever get listed in high tiers, but their designs aren’t extreme enough for most people to feel negative about them.

The closest I come to feeling that way is when people come down hard on certain species for being “ugly” and “horrible.” I truly like the gorillas, anteaters, mice, cows, and hippos! I think they have some of the most unique, charming models and I admit I feel a little defensive when they are ridiculed. Perhaps because Nintendo does seem aware of fan preferences and a little part of me is always afraid my favorites will be cut to appeal to the cutesy-pastel subset of the fandom. Their preferences are just as valid as mine! But I really like having less conventional options and now that NH has toned down most of its non-cute clothing and furniture, I’m hoping all the villagers get to stick around.

Only when my BFF saw Graham on my island and was like, "You have Graham? I'm so sorry..." Lol, she meant well, but it bummed me out a bit because I love Graham!

Anyway, I'm kind of surprised to see how many people hear do apparently (even secretly) judge people for their villager tastes? I don't get that AT ALL. The point of having so many villagers is EVERYONE can have favorites. Even if I see someone who has only the most popular villagers, I don't judge. I may chuckle to myself and think, "That's funny" or "That's cute" but not in a judgmental way.

Of course, Raymond appears to be getting villainized here, because he's basically the most popular villager right now. But... so what? I mean, if you have him on your island because you love him... cool! If you have him on your island because he's popular... equally as cool! Seriously, why would anyone care? Even if it's just because he's popular, if it makes that person happy to have him, why on earth would you judge someone for that? How does it affect your life in any way?

That is valid. I mean, I'm not really that afraid of them cutting my favorite villagers, because there are plenty of others, and I think there's a 0% chance will cut any from the actual game (that seems like a lot of work for absolutely no reward besides making some people angry, and how would they handle people who already had said villagers?)- maybe they won't be included in the next game, but I'm guessing that's years away. I also don't fully agree they've taken out a lot of the non-cute stuff.

But I DO agree that I hate when people bash villagers or species or personalities or whatever in general.. I don't really like seeing anyone bash anything, really (short of really awful things like murder or racism or stuff like that). I guess I got so used to having my interests bashed for so long as a kid that my first thought is always "Even if YOU don't like it, someone else probably loves it." I mean, it really sucks to have your favorite things bashed. It feels like a piece of yourself is being judged. People can say, "Oh, I'm just judging their TASTES, not THEM." but, seriously. C'mon. Personal tastes are part of a person. They're part of what make us all unique. People often feel really invested in things that appeal to them, things they relate to. If you're judging and bashing those things, OF COURSE a lot of people are gonna take that personally. It's one thing to say, "Nah, that's not really my favorite villager." or "I don't really listen to that band much." (or, in my case, any band... but that's another story). It's another to say, "Wait, you like THAT villager? Oh my gosh, they're so ugly and stupid! I'd probably reset if they tried to move onto my island!" or something to that affect. One is a neutral statement, not passing judgment. The other is unnecessary and can hurt feelings. It's just not cool. That's why, whenever I don't like something... I just say I don't like it, maybe give a few reasons why it personally bothers me (for instance, Barold's face is a little too human looking for my tastes- but that's just me), but I don't get nasty about it. There's just no need.

Nah. I don’t

But I judge others for wanting and looking for the same villagers as everyone else.

Oh yes! Sorry, I didn’t mean that they would cut villagers out of THIS game, that wouldn’t make any sense. I meant that this installment seems to cater more to the Instagram-island style of play, probably because Nintendo is aware that social media can do some of their marketing for them, so I was hoping that a possible future Animal Crossing game wouldn’t reduce the number of villagers as well.

Kind of, but I got lucky in a lot of cases with Molly, Roald and Pashmina without grinding or amibos. Then got Marshall, Apollo and Flora from amibos.

I think it’s a toss up. I wanted Marshall because he was awesome, not because he was popular. But he’s popular because he’s awesome.

Moral of the story is to go for the characters you want and don’t worry about what people think.

I dislike Limberg and Rodney as much as the next person, but that's my opinion. I did used to hate Clyde but instantly got used to him, I stopped him from moving today too because of this!
