After three days living in your City you will be granted access to the Island that the former Mayor Tortimer lives on. Empty your pockets before going to the dock to catch the ride to the Island *make sure you arrive at around 5-8pm*. Upon arrival go through the Southern door and take the Fishing Rod and the Butterfly Net from the West at the Gyro. Go back inside the building and wait for the music que *I usually go to the item box and turn back around*. Go back through the Southern door. Do Not Run, walk very slowly, or sneak directly South. Do not disturb any vegetation or bugs as any noise will alert the Golden Stag. When you hit the sand on the Right or Left hand side will be a Fruit Tree close to the beach; on it will be a Golden Stag Beetle *usually. not always. sometimes they are down the beach a bit further on another tree if you have disrupted the area* SNEAK *press and hold the A button* up to it *I've noticed this works best if you are behind the Beetle on the beach* making No Sound! Once you have caught it you may go back inside the building; rinse, repeat. I did this in December and the Stags were on the Island *the guide says they aren't supposed to be there this time of year, but they are*. Tricky catch but doable for $12,000 Bells a piece. I have also found Hercules Beetles, Elephant and Atlas Beetles here. There are also Lantern Moths *often* in the grove of trees before the beach and Horned Dynastid Beetles. If the Stag isn't there check the water for fins or large fish. For some reason the larger Beetles seem to spawn more if you actually open the item box while in the building. I walked out of there last night with Beetles for a grand total of close to $400,000!
