I'm a very new player to ACNH, and I keep catching the same types of fish over and over. I know that different fish are available in different seasons, but is there anything I should be doing to expand the range of fish that I'm getting? I've seen on YouTube that there are sharks etc, do I need to play longer for them to turn up?

What hemisphere are you in? Sharks are only available in summer so if you are in northern hemisphere you won't see them for a while. You can do a google search and find many sites that tell you what fish are out in the different months, times of day and whether they are in the sea, river or ponds.

It depends if you are playing in the Northern Hemisphere or the Southern Hemisphere, right now in the Northern Hemisphere there is no sharks as it not summer in the game. If you are playing in the Southern I believe there are sharks available. Personally the winter months there is less fish available so it feels like you are catching the same fish over and over but in the Summer there is more variety, you just have to wait until a month comes and more fish become available

you are not doing anything wrong, the different fishes you can catch in the game as you have said in your post can appear depending on season, size of shadow and also on time and spot so to say. You will get different fishes when you fish at different hour ranges, if you fish on the river, cliff top, the dock from your beach, the sea, the end of the river that connects to the ocean.
It is said that going to mystery island increases chances of getting rare fishes.

Hope i was on some help :D

Thanks all, I'm in the Northern Hemisphere (UK) so that will explain why! What month is considered the start of spring?

I don't know the exact date, but it's April 1st I believe, if not sometime in late March

Here; I reccommend keeping a tab on this.

For fishing, the beginning of March is the start of spring when a few more fish become available. Winter (December - February) has the least amount of fish available. You only need to catch the pond smelt and blowfish before the end of February. You can catch everything else in future months when there is more variety and you'll probably find the year-round fish while you're looking for season-specific fish. September is the best month for fishing and you can catch most of the fish in NH then.

A mystery island is the one you use a Nook Ticket to go to. I wouldn't spend them just for fishing now. The stringfish is the rarest fish available right now, but you're better off waiting until March to actively look for it since all of the other rare clifftop fish are available then and you can kill multiple birds with one stone.

yes, a mystery island is the nook miles island! and I second the person who suggested using websites to track which fish are available now - I also use an app, ACNH life, which lets me track which fish/bugs I've caught and also shows you what's available to catch at that exact moment. once march rolls around there'll be more to catch, and the summer I think is the peak!
