they are high in potassium and vitamin C​
 
Slugs like them more than cabbage so I heard if you plant them near cabbage, they will leave the cabbage alone. 🤷
 
As well as being rich in vitamin C, they also are potentially associated with slowed cancer growth! (some others, like broccoli and green tea also are!)

Maybe it's both?
Onions from seeds make seed onions, and then seed onions planted the next year make big onions. If left in the ground to make seed, then seeds.
