Does anyone else try to come up with furniture items that would fit really well with different villagers' personalities and then send them a lot of gift mail? I recently got into doing this because it dawned on me how much I ruined my villagers' houses with fish, bugs, and other poorly thought out gifts. Even for those whose homes weren't ruined, sometimes I find their decor... lacking, and want to try out my own ideas.

I'm curious about a few quirks about giving your villagers furniture and what they do with it.

I know that at least most of the time, they'll take your item and use it to replace something that's the same size. Is this a constant, or are there exceptions?

If you, for instance, buy a bad furniture item off them and then gift them a piece of furniture they originally had in the same spot, will they put that item back where it originally was? Or is there a chance it'll go somewhere else, like in an empty spot in the room or replacing an item that was the same size?

Do villagers only replace existing furniture if you give them something, or will they put it in the room if there's an empty space for it?

Is there a set order in which villagers replace furniture (e.g., I give them a 1x1 item, they have several 1x1 items in the room, so the 1x1 piece they've owned the longest is the one that is replaced)?

If I buy an item from them while visiting their house, and then send them an item that is the same size as the thing I bought, will that definitely be the placement of what I give them?

Or is this all, frankly, random?

Thanks in advance for any answers. I haven't done a whole lot of this yet, but if I'm able to learn more about this so I can plan on my strategy for redecorating a villager's house, that'll obviously be helpful. :p

I should really start doing this...

Colton and Kid Cat's houses are literally just fossils, fish, and crap. I felt bad when I went into Colton's house... It was awful. He even told me he didn't like it... He said it was a 'shambles.'

I always look at a list of stuff they like and then I might remake it to make it fit better with the things in their house :D I done it with Fauna a few days ago c:

I'm not sure anyone has delved into this topic enough to give you answers, but it is interesting.

I have to admit that I've kind of used them as dumping grounds for things I don't like. *hangs head in shame* I feel bad that a couple of my villagers don't have beds, though, so I may start putting together rooms that at least have the "five basic items", to quote Lyle. :)

On the Thonky site they have a list of all the villagers and their preferred items and clothing (it's under villagers birthdays). I've had the best success sending them something from that list and them placing it in their house or wearing it!

I always did this in previous games, although you would inevitably walk into a house you'd carefully tried to decorate and find they'd decided to go and buy 3 oil drums. (seriously, in City Folk there was an outbreak of them -- 3 villagers started putting them out!) The old flea market made it easier because you could usually clear a load of junk out all at once.

I haven't tried doing it in NL yet much so not sure how well it works.

I think its kinda random. They dont always replace things when you send them stuff.
I sent Erik a Moon(lol), which is 2x2, and he didnt place it in his house. I thought he might replace his cabin table with it since their the same size. You can replace some villagers tables though, even when they have something on it. I got Hamphrey to replace his table(the big japanese one, I forget the name) with another of the same style, but refurbished by Cyrus
Then you also have items in their houses which they just arnt willing to give up. Again, Erik has this Ski set that I really want but he wont give it up.

I dunno, I tried to decorate villagers houses but its hard. They just end up replacing everything and eventually giving the stuff back to me as gifts ~_~

The fossils are the worst. So ugly. I need to stop thinking about the bells when villagers are trying to buy awful things in retail and think about the style of their overall house... or maybe I should start a bit of quality control items before they go in retail! :D

Awww, that's too bad :\ I'm still gonna try it and see how long I can make it last! Especially with my favorite villagers, since villagers love getting gifts.

Agreed. I walked into Anabelle's house in my bf's town, saw a big fossil in the middle and was like "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE" XD

At first I didn't particularly care what I gave my villagers, though I always gave them furniture when they asked for it (as opposed to bugs, fossils or fish). It wasn't until Velma put out the Kiddie Couch I gave her that I started to think about what I gave them. It bothers me more when they put stuff in their homes of their own accord, replacing their items.

Colton's beautiful (and somewhat suggestive, imo) Regal house was destroyed when he put an Anklyo Skull where his bed was. And I didn't even give him the thing.

I try to get them something that they'll like from Thonky's guide to birthday gifts. And I also try to make sure they have the basics.

Sometimes it's difficult though. Groucho wanted a shark and replaced his modern bed with it. I had gotten a modern bed a few days before, so I sent that to him and he once again has a bed lol
