To continue celebrating the event by blogging, I will keep talking about the older games and their merits.

Animal Crossing may be notorious for invalidating older games by releasing new entries, but prior to New Leaf’s release (and if you want to play an older game), newer entries don’t invalidate older ones completely. While newer may be better, the older Animal Crossing games have advantages that the newer games lack. It’s like capitalism and competition. For instance, there are three different burger restaurants. Want something to eat? Unit One sells only burgers, but their burgers taste better and are cooked better than the burgers from Unit Two and Unit Three. Unit Two allows you to customize your own burgers, which is what Unit One and Unit Three lacks. Unit Three has a larger menu than the other two, as there are a lot more than just burgers. What if you’re more about service? Unit One is the most expensive, but it’s open 24 hours a day. Unit Two is open the shortest, but it has the best customer service. Unit Three is the cheapest, but it has the worst customer service. Want to get a job? Unit One pays their employees the most, but Unit Two has better job security and Unit Three pays for your health insurance. What if you’re more about art? Unit One is the most unique in architecture and interior design, but Unit Two has the best architecture and Unit Three has the best interior design. This is exactly what the first three Animal Crossing games are like. They all have their advantages. They all have their disadvantages. Which ones matter more?

GameCube Version:

I recommend playing this over Wild World and City Folk if...

  • You like holidays, but hate motion controls.
  • You want to visit the island, play with campers, or play mini-games.
  • You like chatting with animals.
  • You want interesting terrain features.
But this is not the game for you if...

  • You like more character customization.
  • You want more storage space.
  • You like playing online or with other players.
  • You like nicer-looking towns.
Wild World:

I recommend playing this over the GameCube Version and City Folk if...

  • You like playing on the go.
  • You like larger homes.
  • You want your personal screen.
  • You want more features, but hate motion controls.
But this is not the game for you if...

  • You like holidays.
  • You want a larger map and/or extra places.
  • You want multiple homes.
  • You like having more items/villagers.
City Folk:

I recommend playing this over Wild World and the GameCube Version if...

  • You like holidays that you can celebrate.
  • You are a prolific house designer.
  • You like more town features (like fountains).
  • You like better-designed facilities.
But this is not the game for you if...

  • You hate grass deterioration.
  • You hate motion controls.
  • You like having multiple towns and hate sharing towns.
  • You want to play with others locally.
What about New Leaf?

Somehow, all unique qualities one game has that the other game doesn’t are all present in Animal Crossing New Leaf and Welcome amiibo. This managed to solve all of our problems with the older games, but if you’re interested into playing the older games, choose what game you feel best. New Leaf appealed to nostalgia by returning GameCube exclusive features like train station and the island while keeping the modern features City Folk had. And it’s something you can play on a smaller device like Wild World. But if you want to play an Animal Crossing game with the following, none of the older games would be better for you:

  • You like further house customization and character customization.
  • You like town customization.
  • You want larger homes, but more than one home.
  • You want much more storage space.
