Highlight the text and there should be a font selection somewere on the toolbar?

You should use Paint.NET for a few months before moving onto GiMP. GiMP is advanced D:

Ooh, congrats on GIMP! :3 I used to use it before I got semi-Photoshop (aka Elements)
