I've only been playing a couple of weeks, had some good interactions with people from the GameFAQs board, then got burned the one time I didn't follow a guest around

Came here because I want a place where I can build a good reputation and for there to be consequences for bad behaviour.

Sorry for the bad experience. I feel your pain: someone destroyed my town many months ago when I was still a naive enough player to let people wander while I was away for long periods of time. Most of the visitors were good people, one even leaving a kind note on my board near the station before leaving (with comments such as 'what a lovely town' and 'thanks for having me'). Wish I had more control over what guests could do so I wouldn't have to worry about the bad eggs. (For example, there could be an option to not allow shovel, net, etc. when the guest comes over, much like what happens when you board Kappa's boat. Or maybe the first time a guest shovels a bush or picks up a flower or item, a menu item comes up asking whether you want to give a guest permission to keep doing that.)
