I am in a bit of a tough situation here and I would like some help. We just had a break in our neighborhood last night. The thief made off with an ipad and some cash about a $100.This pretty shook us up since our neighborhood was safe and we never had this problem before. Everybody is more conscious now. I thought about getting an alarm system. I have already shortlisted a few ( http://www.fire-monitoring.com/intrusion-alarm-monitoring/ ) but I would like to get opinion from someone who has already got an alarm system installed. Price is not an issue with me. I just want something that would last a long time. Any thoughts on this would be great.

When we had more money and lived in a ritzy neighborhood we had an alarm system, ADT I believe, we had a few attempted break in's that were thwarted by our alarm system so it definitely worked, sorry that this happened to you. We'd have to set the alarm each time we left so it was interesting trying to sprint across the house and lock it before the alarm went off, these days they're all integrated with your phones and such which is really nice.

How did the thief break in? You have the option to buy stronger locks for your doors too - and make sure to use them. Some people don't really lock their doors.

My family uses ADT as well, and has for years, and we have never had a successful break-in (we've only had like 2-3 attempts over like a decade anyway but still).

ADT.
Put that on your windows (mostly first floors, other floors are an option) and all doors.

And honestly even having the little stickers in your window that SAY you have home protection deters a lot of attempts, or buying a security camera, real OR fake.

You can get security cameras on amazon too. They email you pictures of any movement and record to the computer. There was an article out recently that interviewed theifs and they all said a security camera would detour them from messing with a house.

Buy a bear. Any thief with half a brain will think twice before breaking into a house that has a bear.

But if they beat the bear, they've pretty much earned their reward. Congratulate them, shake their hand and invest in a more dangerous exotic animal...Like a tiger or something.

So sorry about what happened. Since my family lived in our current house (aka pretty much my whole life) we've been robbed I think 4 times... the last time it happened they ran off with our main Apple PC and my mother's handbag (and all its contents, aka a buttload of documents and a couple hundred euros).

We've never installed any kind of alarm since some of our neighbours tried 'em and all they do is break and go off when they're not supposed to and annoy everyone until they shut it off :p

We've had the police review our home's security and they basically told us the only useful thing we can do is install new, safer locks on our doors and update 'em every few years. We already have a "natural" alarm anyway since my dog barks everytime anyone comes near our house (even at night), but we also have to be on our guard since thieves sometimes try to poison guard dogs before they attempt to break into a house... it happened to the family that lives in front of us and their dog died because she was still just a puppy :,(

Locks.
These things are amazing.
Once in 2004 we had a break-in and since then we never leave our door unlocked, and we also put two locks on the doors.
But then in 2007 we had another break-in (they entered from the kitchen door) and since then we never leave the kitchen door.
Since then no break-in.
